Travelers take unexpected in stride
“On the way to our hotel room, I asked Larry: 'How do you like traveling light?”
Traveling can provide some interesting experiences and challenges.
Just ask Haslet residents Joyce Yates and hubby Larry, who is in the steel business and is president of a cattle breeder's association.
The pair left on a three-day, business/pleasure trip to Houston, stopping in Jewett to talk to a steel mill official, who gave them some advertising T-shirts, said Joyce.
Joyce had packed a couple of suitcases carefully, mindful that on a previous trip, 'Larry had griped and said we should travel a little lighter,' Joyce said. 'But in Houston everybody dresses up, even the people showing the animals.' Read more

Preacher offers fast track to heaven
“Then I thought, 'Why don't I just do one big prize that anybody anywhere can try for?'”
The road to hell may be paved with good intentions, but the highway to heaven could come with a new set of wheels.
That's Haslet preacher Ronnie Hill's plan. He is offering people a chance to win a new Dodge truck, Jeep Wrangler or Chrysler 300 -- provided they listen to his three-minute testimony about Jesus.
Those who watch Hill's video at his recently created Web site -- www.threeminutestory.com -- can sign up online for the Dec. 12 drawing.
For 20 years, the traveling evangelist has preached at rodeos, NASCAR races and motorcycle rallies. He has offered many incentives to hear him out -- among them a free chance to ride a mechanical bull. Read more

Incumbent besting conservative challenger
“I knew that my support would come from the teachers and the concerned parents. They don't want the education system taken over by people who don't know about education.”
Incumbent Pat Hardy of Weatherford was leading the Republican primary for the District 11 seat on the State Board of Education, according to unofficial, incomplete results Tuesday night.
Hardy had 59.2 percent of the votes, compared with 40.8 percent for Cleburne urologist Dr. Barney Maddox, with early voting and 304 of 572 precincts reporting.
There was no candidate in the Democratic primary. Bruce Beckman of Haslet is a Libertarian seeking the seat.
Maddox has called evolution 'fairy tales.' If he had been elected to the board, social conservatives would have had their first majority on the 15-member board. Of 10 Republicans, seven are considered social conservatives. The other five members are Democrats. Read more

Geren has called Annunziato a liar for campaign mailers that Geren said distorts his record. Annunziato, a former Geren supporter, has said he was just pointing out areas in which the two candidates disagree. Read more

Texas 114 traffic stop leads to discovery of truck chop shop
“It has been a pretty incredible day”
The slow-moving flatbed truck hauling 18-wheeler parts caught the eye of Keller patrol officer Mike Norris.
The truck was traveling only 30 mph Thursday afternoon on Texas 114, so Norris pulled it over. The stop led detectives to a tractor trailer chop shop and as many as four thieves who dismantled up to $800,000 worth of parts from five stolen trucks.
'It just looks like an 18-wheeler graveyard,' Detective Jesse Minton said Friday morning of the fenced lot in the 4800 block of Keller-Haslet Road. As officers talked to truck driver Rodrigo Garcia on Thursday afternoon, Norris saw the front end of a Freightliner truck on the flatbed trailer, Keller police Lt. Brenda Slovak said. Read more
