Hartford Police Union Rejects City's Call For Concessions

Full story: Hartford Courant

Richard Rodriguez, president of the 400-member union, said he would not discuss specifics of the proposal turned down by membership, nor would he discuss earlier offers or counteroffers made in talks in recent months about changes to the contract.

Hartford expects the police union to accept concessions to help close a budget deficit of $3.2 million. You can't blame them for saying no after reading of the city's recent generous $1 million contribution to the "Arts" and the continued squandering of funds for legal costs in the mayor's mulish quarrel with the FOI commission.

agreed.

It seems like they are in it to collect as much as they can, then they bail out.

Doing their job would be a nice thing. They are always saying they are in it for the job satisfaction, yet that remains to be seen.

How can the police do a better job you ask? Easy.

1)Show up in under 6 hours.

2)If you are called back more than 3 times on a count of the same person, a ticket or arrest would be nice.

3)Give the call center staff at the HPD a refresher course in customer service-the people calling are not the bad guys.

4)You don't have to tell the guy that just slashed my tires I called on him-if he knows that my life will hit a new level of miserable as soon as you leave the parking lot.

How can City Hall Staff do a better job you ask? Easy

1) I am not calling you because I have nothing better to do- connect me to the right person the first time. If you don't know who that is, say so.

2) Get a refresher coarse in manners- I voted you in there, and I can vote you out. When I ask you a question, at times, you can almost hear the Loony Tunes theme playing in the back ground. If I ask a straight forward question, I expect a straight forward answer.

3) Hanging up the phone. It's a given you just don't want to answer the question, so you dealt with it by not dealing with it. The only thing you have accomplished is to make that person angrier, and they will call back with 100 times more attitude then if you just told them what they wanted to know.

How can the mayor do a better job you ask? easy.

1)Live on your salary, and keep your fingers out of the chauffeurs.

If the HARTFORD POLICE would do the job they are payed to do,, this city would not be so grossly infested with disrespectful SOB’s. If the HPD were to enforce all laws specially the quality of life laws Hartford would be a super clean city and would have plenty of cash considering all the fines they can collect on. Unfortunately the last laugh is on our Police Department,,and the good people of Hartford ,,yes we are suffering it.

Other than parking fines, most of the revenue generated would go to the State of CT.

You've also got to add PARENTS to that equation. It would be nice if the police could actually enforce the QoL laws, but they cannot teach manners, respect for self and others.

Hartford Police are held to the law, they can not just harass people or arrest people with out cause.

You can thank all the attorneys that graduate every year out of law schools.

You sure that's a "reality check"? it sounds like finger pointing to me.

Maybe they "can not" but that doesn't seem to stop them when they do.

And the sad yet funny part about it is when the person on the receiving end complains, it ALWAYS comes down to my word vs yours. The cops are the judge and jury, so who do you think wins?

I admit there are a fair amount of nut jobs out there, but everybody who either disagrees with the HPD, or points out their short comings, is not an automatic nut job, though HPD would like that to be the case.

HPD regularly slacks off. When called, they show up, at their convenience, if they show up at all. It seems that every call that goes to the call center is automatically rated a "c", meaning the cop has 3 days to respond.

The HPD needs ALOT of work.

Now, this is where the comments start. Let me guess, I failed the police academy entrance exam on some level, right?

Or how about this, I am bitter because I got locked up once.

Or my personal favorites, the mental health jokes.

I am none of the above, I am a person who has seen the HPD, in the field, at work, and I am not impressed.

I left Hartford because it was going down hill at warp speed, and I wouldn't return for any amount of money.

I agree Hartford needs revamping, I am not so sure it is needed at the HPD. I think it needs to start at the top. Stop making everything the police do have political ramifications associated with their work. Unfortunately, Hartford does not have the corner on this issue either.

I have been profiled and harassed by big city police, at work even, but that is a story for a different forum.

I understand what the police are up against, especially in today's environment, where parents are NOT taking responsibility for their kids or even present in their lives. I do not envy police in their work.

I disagree.

There has to be consequences for bad behavior. If your bad behavior is effecting John Q public, then I believe the PD should be called and action should be taken.

Yes we can say "Mommy didn't train him/her right." or "Daddy the sperm donor was not around", "He just had a rotten life and has no sense."

But why should the rest of us HAVE to deal with that?

That's why the PD are there. And going back to what I said earlier, if they have to come out more than 3 times for the same person/problem, a ticket/arrest would be nice.

This is where I take issue with the HPD. They don't come out, they frustrate the poor slob that has to deal with the pain in the ___. And if that person that makes the calls enough, they are suddenly the problem. It has also been said that HPD will routinely advise the person on the receiving end to move.

It takes 3,000 to do a move right (first, last, van and helper pay). Sorry, my money tree died last year.

Can you pull 3 G's out of your packet on a moments notice? I can't.

It's like the receiver is punished. Makes perfect sense.

If your going to behave like a no account, the world owes me idiot, then keep it behind your doors, with your family. The neighbors for 2 city blocks don't want to hear it and shouldn't have to. The police are there to make sure this doesn't happen.

It would be nice if they actually did enforce the QL issues at least some of the time.

The fact is the law is the law and on ones above the law. The HPD gets paid to keep the peace and enforce all laws,,and when it comes to that the HPD fall nothing short of a poor excuses. I could care less how other people raise their kids , but if you break the law you should be prosecuted, fined, or be forced to do community service no ands ifs or buts. At the moment here in Hartford we have sons of bitches galore getting away with all the BS they can put out,,and the HARTFORD POLICE continue to suck their thumbs and cry like babies meanwhile the city is on a roller coaster to hell.

Daily Horoscope for January 5

Cancer

You've had enough time to yourself lately. This is a day to focus on family, with all the good and bad that that brings. Crabs would much rather be at the top of the tree than down near the roots, but that's life. You might be smart when it comes to matters of the heart, but you don't know it all quite yet.
