Congratulations to the Harrisburg Library for proving a function of government does not require high taxes to serve the public. I am having utopian dreams of what it would be like if all forms and levels of government would behave this way. Can you imagine a state legislature working for donations? Only those who truly wish to serve the public would run for office. What if the mayor, instead of asking for a tax increase decided to live within his means and find ways to improve services at the same time? Sigh..

This is great for Harrisburg, but if systems like Columbus or Cuyahoga tried to go this route it'd be a disaster. A library that circulates 15-20 books a day you can get away with this approach (not well, but you can get by). Circulating several thousand books a day is an entirely different story.

Its wonderful that Harrisburg is able to get by through nontraditional funding methods, but their situation if far from ideal. I'd hate for its example to be used as an excuse for perpetually underfunding libraries, especially when there are numerous areas where government spending can and should be cut.

15 to 20 book A DAY? I check out that many all by myself. Get real, the library needs public funds to survive.

Get real. Few adults much less, CHILDREN, could afford to buy ALL the books they SHOULD read. Think about it.

Quote from Andrew Carnegie (who was not a "dead beat")

"There is not such a cradle of democracy upon the earth as the Free Public Library, this republic of letters, where neither rank, office, nor wealth receives the slightest consideration."

"Deadbeat" is ONE word by the way ... perhaps if you'd spent a little time in the public libary with a dictionary ...

If libraries were something new as of today, all the authors would sue due to copyright laws and loaning books out for free.
Just chew on that one!

So, thank God libraries aren't "something new as of today." If they were, the level of civilization would be far lower than it is. And it's already far lower than it ought to be.

why should I pay money so you can go check out books for free? get off your lazy butt and pay for something once in a while....you are part of the overall problem....always wanting something for free

Daily Horoscope for January 4

Pisces

Family, friends and in-laws are all hard to please. It is better to please yourself for once, dear Pisces, than to bang your head against a wall. You need to relax and get in touch with your own feelings. Do not hesitate to speak up for someone you care about. Someone may try to curtail your freedom. Set them straight and do not give in.
