Idolina Garcia
GRUVER - Idolina Garcia, 84, died Sunday, March 30, 2008.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, April 3, 2008 in Gruver United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gary Gumfory and Isabel Martinez officiating. Burial will be in Hansford Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.
Mrs. Garcia was born April 1, 1923, in Chihuahua, Mexico. She married Ramon Garcia in 1959. She was a homemaker and a member of the Primera Iglesia Bautista Church of Spearman
Survivors include six daughters, Eustolia Simental of Juarez, Mexico, Ramona Sota of El Paso, Josefa Granados of Gruver, Soledad Favela of Sunland Par, NM, Herminia Aguilar of Gruver, and Sandy Franco of El Paso; a son, Ramon Garcia Jr. of Gruver; a brother, Lalo Ochoa of Chihuahua; a sister, Socorro Morales of Juarez; 26 grandchildren; and 39 great-grandchildren. The students from Spearman and Gruver PK-6th grade were visited by Panhandle's own author, John Erickson, on Thursday, March 13th.
Mr. Erickson presented a delightful rendition of his Hank the Cowdog songs and books. The program was educational and very entertaining.
Local PTOs made this possible for the students. Morse Elementary shared in the program with Gruver.

NPEC Youth Tour Winners Announced
Leigh Ann Winger of Gruver and Jonathan Harder of Perryton won a 9-day, all expense paid trip to Washington, DC as winners of North Plains Electric Cooperative's Government-in-Action Youth Tour contest.
Leigh Anne, a sophomore at Gruver High School, is the daughter of David and Teague Winger. Harder, a junior at Perryton High School, is the son of Loren and Maylene Harder. They will join other young people from Texas who have won similar contests on June 12 in Irving. From there they will fly to Washington, DC. Read more

Pringle-Morse CISD 5th and 6th graders participated in a Solo Festival/Recital on March 11th at the Pringle-Morse auditorium. Each student played a solo before a judge an audience of family ang guests.

Four GHS Students Receive Student Achievement Award
Four Gruver High School students received the "Texas Student Achievement Award" from the Texas ACT Council for their performance on the PLAN (Pre-ACT) Assessment. These students are on target to meet or exceed ACT's College Readiness Benchmarks by graduation. ACT's College Readiness Benchmarks are empirically-based and identify the level of achievement necessary in English, mathematics, reading and science to have a successful college freshman experience.

North Plains Electric Offers Free Trip to Washington, DC for Area Teenagers
The Board of Directors of North Plains Electric Cooperative, Inc. has authorized the sponsorship of a speech contest among students attending school in the Cooperative's service area. Two winners of the Government-in-Action Youth Tour contest will be awarded an exciting all-expense-paid trip to Washington, DC, June 12-20, 2008.
This contest is open to any boy or girl, age 15-19, who attends school (either public, private or home taught) in the North Plains Electric Cooperative service area. Students must be either a sophomore, junior or senior in high school. Schools considered to be in NPEC's service area include Booker, Canadian, Darrouzett, Follett, Gruver, Higgins, Perryton and Spearman. Read more

Hansford County Residents to Benefit from Increased Warning Capability
“Big Mouth was a single modem system using a single phone line to individually call each resident of threatening conditions. The "Big Mouth”
Residents of Hansford County will soon recognize an additional component of warning has been added to the arsenal of warning capabilities as they begin receiving "test" messages over their phones in the next few weeks. Several partners in Hansford County have financed a new system of warning called "CodeRED". The partners making the new system possible include Hansford County, the Cities of Spearman and Gruver, Hansford Hospital, the Pringle-Morse CISD and GRUVER ISD. Through these partners' efforts every citizen of Hansford County can now be "warned" of impending emergencies and disasters in a matter of only a few minutes. Read more

Sheriff's Department Investigates Death
The Hansford County Sheriff Department is investigating a death occurring from an industrial accident involving a grain auger.
The accident was reported to the Hansford County Sheriff Department at approximately 10:00 a.m. on 01-05-2008. This accident resulted in the death of a 32 year old Gruver man identified as Heath Grimes.
Mr. Grimes was employed at a local elevator in Gruver, TX.

The Board of Directors of the Gruver State Bank in Gruver, TX recently announced the promotion of K. Kyle Irwin to President & CEO.
K. Kyle Irwin is a Gruver native and a Texas Tech graduate. He started his banking career with Boatman's Bank in Amarillo and then worked for Bank of Amarillo. He has been with Gruver State Bank for nine years.

Gruver Cross Country Regional Qualifiers
Several student athletes competed and qualified in the regional cross country meet in Lubbock. The meet was the conclusion of a very successful season for the GHSXC teams.
Katie Gibson ran a personal best 13:12 in the two mile event and placed 31st among 176 runners.
The boys qualified as a team, with Ramon Mendoza, Wil McCloy, Joel Soto, Gustavo Vega, Gabriel Mendoza, Gonzalo Vega and Jeronimo Trejo earning the top seven spots on the team. Each boy recorded a personal best in their race, with Jeronimo Trejo leading the way with an impressive 17:26 and a 21st place finish, in the 3 mile run. Read more

Gruver Third Grader Wins Trip to Disney World
Gruver Elementary third grader, Braxton Crane, received word on Friday, August 31st that he had won an all expense paid trip for four to Disney World.
Braxton was entered into a national drawing with all children who collected money for Jump Rope for Heart last year. The drawing was sponsored by the American Heart Association.
Braxton, his sister Makenzie, and mother, Tiffany, and sponsor Cindy Martindale were all very excited about the news.
