Was the trench properly shored up? Thank God he wasn't crushed to death.

Great job CAL FIRE and City of Chico Fire! Best of luck to the victim for a fast recovery.

We do have the best fire departments around! |

|
Let's not forget the ambulance crew who stabilized the patient before fire could initiate rescue and also transported. Great job by Cal Fire and Chico Fire for expediting the rescue of the patient in a timely manner. Successful rescue and my thoughts and prayers go out to this man to have a speedy recovery.

The guy was in extreme pain and the paramedics helped him with the pain on the way to the hospital.

Talking to a Butte County worker recently who was on a drain installation project on Bell Road, where the trench was at least 8 feet deep, working with no shoring. I'm sure there must be OSHA requirements to ensure the safety of these workers. As a government agency don't the same rules apply to them as they do a private contractor?

I work as an underground pipeline welder, and no, government agencies are not excluded from any O.S.H.A. regulations. There can be steep fines and even jail time associated with gross negligence. Especially when the are injuries involved.

"ONLY a broken leg & pelvis?"
That's pretty major to me. |

This ditch stuff happens all the time. It's because this cowboy they have running the show over there thinks he knows more than anybody else. He instructed a construction company to dig without a USA on 8th avenue too and guess what, they hit a gas main and started a fire.

If there is a problem, why isn't it being addressed by management? Before somebody gets injured or killed? What about a saftey director on the job site? Seems so simple.
|
||||
|
If there was an accident and O.S.H.A. was to begin an investigation, any type of a coverup on behalf of management, would result in large fines and the possibility of jail time. Contractors who are in business and want to remain in business, know that being O.S.H.A. compliant isn't to be taken lightly. If city public works or county public works are working out of compliance, heads should roll...

There will be fines, to the TAXPAYERS! Who do you think is going to pay when this injured yahoo sues his employer, the state, and anyone else he can fit on the paper? That's the only time the rules are enforced, is when someone gets hurt - the "OH MY! WE NEED TO MAKE SURE EVERYONE IS FOLLOWING THE RULES", then they make new, strictor rules for everyone that only a few will follow, etc.

Back in the 1990's I worked out at the sewer plant ,and was ordered into a ditch over 5' deep with no shoring. I refused to do it and a few minutes later the ditch collapsed.Unions do little to protect employees,companies well just hire mostly Mexican's to do it . Not picking on Mexicans ,it's mostly white people who order un-safe work to be done.
