Scripps discovery might be early step toward Alzheimer's drug
At the end of Esther Balogh's life, it was clear what Alzheimer's had stolen.
She spent her days at an assisted living facility in Greenacres. Yet Balogh was certain she was in Philadelphia, where she grew up.
'She never seemed to know where she was or what she was doing,' said her daughter, Linda Balogh, of Wellington . 'She didn't really understand there was anything wrong with her.'
Esther Balogh died two years ago at age 87, becoming one of a growing number of Americans claimed by Alzheimer's disease. The only drugs available now attack the symptoms but not the disease.

Traffic may limit Palm Beach Community College development
Palm Beach Community College wants to build a new campus here, but the size of that campus and the number of students it takes could depend on how much extra traffic nearby roads can handle.
The college wants to put the campus on vacant park land on U.S. 441 and Pierson Road, but a Wellington traffic study shows that roadway will reach its maximum capacity the very first year the college hopes to open with an anticipated 2,000 students. Beyond that hoped-for opening in 2010, as the campus adds students and buildings in later years, U.S. 441 won't be able to handle the extra traffic, and that could limit the campus' development, Wellington Deputy Operations Director Jim Barnes said.

Two Republicans vie for shot at challenging Aronberg for state Senate seat
Is shooting squirrels a qualification for the state Senate?
Or are diatribes about gays and minorities the campaign themes that will help a candidate unseat veteran Sen. Dave Aronberg, D-Greenacres?
A pair of Republicans will clash in the August primary for a chance to challenge Aronberg and tip the balance of power in the state Senate even more heavily into Republican hands.
Targeting Aronberg as Florida's most vulnerable Democratic senator, the state GOP is putting the party's financial muscle behind a 26-year-old property appraiser named Matt Caldwell.Caldwell is gearing a campaign toward bedrock Republican issues - taxes and guns - and is trying to siphon off voters in conservative southwestern Florida, what Republicans see as Aronberg's Achilles' heel in sprawling District 27.
