While the Highland Area Christian Service Ministry helps make the lives easier of community residents in need, the organization has received a wish of its own -- a new home.

Madison County officials say they're worried about apparent efforts to acquire land and underground mineral rights in the northeastern corner of the county for "longwall" coal mining.

“We do not have the funds at this time, but we anticipate we will. I feel fully confident that we can come up with a bid by the seventh of April -- a contract -- that HACSM can fully fund.”

Highland and a Christian organization that helps the needy are working to reduce projected costs of building a larger service center after bids came in about $100,000 more than expected.

Rather than seek new architectural drawings and new bids, Highland City Council is working with low-bidder Korte & Luitjohan Contractors Inc. in Highland to cut costs for Highland Area Christian Service Ministry's new center. Eight firms bid on the project. Korte & Luitjohan submitted the lowest, at $451,000. Read more
