<![CDATA[Job description: The Hansen Co. is a commercial general contractor and construction manager. We build and manage construction projects through myriad industries and project types. Background: I was born and raised in Des Moines and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in construction management, but the best training I got came from my dad, who was a superintendent when I was growing up. My dad used to take me with him to job sites and construction projects, where I would not only learn the ropes but ultimately fall in love with this business. Notable achievements: Being a part of this industry has allowed me to be involved in so many great organizations, including leadership positions for the Des Moines Construction Council and the Iowa Construction Industry Forum. Why I do what I do: We build buildings, but this is a people business. I enjoy the variety of people we get to work with every day, including sharp, intelligent builders in the field, visionary architects and business-savvy owners. What I do to get away from work: Last year we built a cabin near Grand River. My family loves to hunt, fish and enjoy nature, so this has been a wonderful place to unplug from a 24/7 world. Words to live by: Give everyone respect and common courtesy. The best place in central Iowa to entertain clients or colleagues: I think the Iowa Cubs provide the biggest bang for the buck; quality entertainment on a family budget in an unbelievable venue is pretty hard to beat! What Iowa can do to attract more people like me: Keep developing downtown; it's so exciting to see what's going on down there in terms of housing, retail, entertainment and cultural attractions. My mentor: My dad, Vern, has provided me with the foundation of my core beliefs, work ethic and attitude. He worked two jobs to support our family, which included myself, my mom and six siblings, and through his support and sacrifice we've all turned out pretty good. Learning the true meaning of hard work and sacrifice are two principles which I owe to my dad. My leadership philosophy: I am a hands-on guy, but I'm not a micro-manager. I like to be in touch with our team (field to office) so I can understand their struggles and triumphs to better help them achieve their goals. What I would do if I could do something else: I have always loved building, so it would definitely still be in this industry, but maybe something on the owner's side of things like an owner's agent or representative where I can use my experience in a different way.
