It's a virtual toxic waste disaster - they've wiped out the land and filled it with toxic waste.

For the uninformed, the natural ore tailings contain silica and iron ore, the water that was mixed with it when placed in the tailings basin has long since returned to the natural circulation. The process used to separate it further into natural ore separated from the silica would use magnetation of the ore to separate it. Checked, from what I can find out, magnetization doesn't seem to be toxic.
