Caught On Tape: Cuban Rafters Off Key West
A group of Cuban rafters were picked up by the Coast Guard over the weekend off the Florida Keys.
The 7 refugees were first spotted by group of cruise ship passengers about 30 miles south of Key West. As the captain slowed the ship to get a closer look at the group he radioed their position to the Coast Guard.
Passengers on the upper decks took home video of the 6 men and woman as they paddled what looked to be a makeshift boat made of wood, blue tarps and tape. As cruise ship crew members gave the refugees water and bread, they were told that the group had been at sea for four nights. One of the rafters gave a passenger the phone number of his father who lived in Miami. That passenger called the older man to let him know his son was all right.
