I lived in Middletown at the time of the storm, but could not get home because of flooding. I could not get home for a several days.
I was visiting my aunt and undle in Round Town and had to stay over. The thing I remember the most was the water running through the corn field next to their house. |

While working 2nd shift at York Graphic Services on Princess Street, the hurricane hit. My family was frantically calling me to get home as soon as possible. So I left early and drove across the bridge on Grantley Road to head south to Railroad. The water was lapping at the roadway of the bridge. It was rather scary, but I made it home safely. I also remember people being rescued from their homes in Glen Rock at the 2nd story level in boats. There was lots of damage to the railroad lines in the Glen Rock area as well.

Four railroad bridges were completely destroyed between Glen Rock and York; one near Hanover Junction, the beautiful twin stone arch bridge near the old Reynolds' Mill (ever wonder how "Twin Arch Road" got its name) and a very long structure north of Brillhart station. Can't remember the fourth. This completely isolated the Stewartstown Railroad from the rest of the world. Fortunately the President of the Stewartstown Railroad was John Hope Anderson, who had risen to a respectable leadership position in the State House. When his support was needed for a tax bill and budget a deal was cut to rehabilitate the bridges and restore the rail line by 1985--a very expensive "retirement present" but one which ultimately enabled the construction of the Heritage Rail Trail. |
