Sacred springs now covered by Glen Elder Reservoir
Originally a sacred gathering site for Native American tribes, Waconda Springs in Mitchell Coun ty was turned into a health resort at the beginning of the 20th century.The site was destroyed in the 1960s when Glen Elder Reservoir was created This is one in a series of vignettes celebrating the state's history.
The Pawnee were among the strongest of all the Plains Indians. Their influence stretched west into present-day Kansas, Nebraska, and parts of the Colorado prairie.
