The abandoned National Welding factory on Cedar Street is coated on the inside with asbestos and sits on ground that is contaminated with petroleum.
But the 4-acre site off Route 9 that town officials have stamped as an eyesore can be cleaned up for commercial development, according to an environmental assessment of the property that was presented to the town council Tuesday night. The town now plans to solicit developers for the site in the next few months.
Dave Hurley, an environmental engineer with the consulting firm Fuss & O'Neill, which conducted the three-phase study with help from the Department of Environmental Protection, told the council that the cost of removing the contamination 'is more than the value of the property, but it's not astronomical.

Man Gets 15-Year Prison Term For Shooting Glastonbury Officer
A Glastonbury police officer on Tuesday told a judge in Superior Court in Hartford that a plea deal for the man who shot him two years ago is 'kind of a slap in the face.' Minutes later, Judge David Gold sentenced Candido Camacho to 15 years in prison, telling him 'you deserve every day' of it. The full sentence is 25 years, suspended after 15, followed by five years of probation. Officer Nathan Saucier suffered from what was described as a 'grazing' type of wound, although prosecutor Sandra Tullius said he still has bullet fragments in his right arm. Camacho, now 43, was living in Hartford when he was arrested in 2006. He pleaded guilty May 21 to first-degree assault and third-degree burglary, a charge that stems from a convenience store break-in he committed shortly before he shot Saucier. His plea on the assault charge was under the Alford doctrine, which means he does not admit guilt, but concedes the state has enough evidence to convict him in a trial. Saucier briefly described his emotions during the early morning struggle with Camacho on June 25, 2006. Camacho is bigger and, at the time of the confrontation, was stronger than Saucier.

New Plan Saves Much Of Vacant Glastonbury School
When the town council in April held a tour of the vacant Academy School and an informational meeting about its future, residents urged that as much of the historic building be preserved as possible.
On Tuesday, the council heard a new proposal that would save a large portion of the building from the wrecking ball.
Over the past year, Town Manager Richard J. Johnson and the council had discussed two options for the building's 'D' wing, directly behind town hall: renovate it as school administrative offices or demolish it and build a new one for the offices.
