The Houston/Galveston National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Statement for today and tonight.

One year ago yesterday, residents of the Galveston area awoke to widespread destruction as Hurricane Ike tore inland.

The service is part of a nearly weeklong series of events to highlight rebuilding and recovery efforts in the year since Ike made landfall just outside Galveston in the early morning hours of Sept.

Gilchrist, Texas was once a beautiful waterfront fishing town. But a year after Hurricane Ike devastated the region, it remains in ruins.

At this time last year, Hurricane Ike was in the Gulf of Mexico and everyone along the coast was praying for the best.

Hots dogs, apple pie, cold drinks and, of course, fireworks can be found across Galveston County to celebrate the Fourth of July.
