Most of the impact of the traffic to be re-routed from the construction actually will be in the 5th District on Studebaker, Palo Verde and Willow. Thus the meeting in the 5th District.

Studebaker, Willow and Palo Verde cam handle the extra flow of traffic. This improvement is LONG over due and sorely needed. Thankfully someone is DOING something about it. Traffic on 7th is a nightmare right now and this will help with that. We ALL have to do our part. It will take some getting used to, it won't be easy, and not everyone will be happy. Well, guess what? thats life! DEAL with it. It won't be as bad as people want to make it out to be. People will find alternate routes to get home other than traveling thru our precious LB. This isn't Iowa by the sea anymore. This is a major metropolitan city with MAJOR problems, traffic flow being one of them and we need to start fixing this and our other problems.

Ok, people...lets look at the BIG PICTURE! Right now, the commute in L.A. is abyssmal! Anything to lighten the impact on the freeways in the FUTURE will help! If you all fight over this and say NO then you have no one but yourselves to blame in the future. I am leaving L.A. because I hate the traffic, the congestion and many other things about being here! Think of what it will be like in the FUTURE, look at the BIG PICTURE! Not just what it will be like for a few years...look beyond your nose! Don't be short sighted. Anything to help the traffic congestion in the long run is a good thing! And Gerri Schiepski is such a whiner!

This is liberal social engineering [car pool lanes] that costs billions of dollars. The real question should be, should that money be spent on regular freeway traffic improvements?

Unfortunately, the politicians are caught hook, line and sinker in this waste.

I agree. If the corrupt politicians were really interested in freeway improvements rather than grandstanding for photo-ops, they would get busy on the "job creating" and congestion relieving cross-town freeway.

You're right. According to LB City Traffic Engineer, Dave Roseman, 40% of the traffic will be re-routed through the 3rd District, and 50% will be re-routed through the 4th. Councilmembers DeLong and O'Donnell have already hosted community meetings on the project that included presentations from OCTA.

The City Traffic Engineer's breakdown states:
40% will use 2nd Street
30% will use Palo Verde
20% will use Bellflower
10% will use Willow
Cars exiting the NB 405 at Palo Verde and Bellflower may, technically, be in the 5th District momentarily, but they will impact the 4th District as soon as they cross under the freeway heading south. However, even if the 5th District absorbs only 10% of the impact (via Willow), it's well worth the effort to hold a community meeting with OCTA.

Unfortunately, this project will NOT include any 7th Street traffic improvements. The 7th Street bridge will be torn down, and then it will be rebuilt a year later with the exact same capacity. Also, the title "...East Long Bech freeway improvement project" is misleading. 100% of the improvements are in Orange County, not Long Beach.

At least OCTA is making improvements on the 405 on the Orange County side. What, if any, improvements does the MTA in Los Angeles County have in store for the 405 on the Long Beach side?

Darryl-- don't know where you got your figures but those shown to the City Council last week as we negotiate with OCTA for mitigation funds showed the Palo Verde and Bellflower which is the 5th and substantial traffice going up to Spring and then down on Studebaker which is all of the 5th. If you doubt this, ask our Traffic engineer David Roseman why those figures were shown to the City Council and why they were used to get mitigation funds from OCTA.
The meeting we're hosting is with OCTA. They are making the presentation not me.

Can they name the 405 after me, like they do in Chicago?

Gerrie -- I got my figures from City Traffic Engineer, Dave Roseman's letter to OCTA dated 4/9/09, and I quoted his numbers verbatim. The graphic illustration with his letter shows 30% of the volume exiting at Palo Verde, and then it is split four ways. The illustration does not indicate what percentage of the 30% will travel north, but my guess would be a very small number. Also, if my original post was not clear, I fully support your hosting the meeting.

Daily Horoscope for December 7

Aquarius

You're full of energy and determination right now, especially when it comes to nailing an ambition or making a name for yourself. You'll want to give it your best shot, and you'll get very annoyed if you feel your efforts are being frustrated by others. Watch out for a rather tense atmosphere with someone older or more influential than you, as this could lead to a row.
