Deep in the woods of Curtin Township, twin stone pillars once offered a gateway to work.
From 1933 to 1935, during the depths of the Depression, the former S-121 'Salt Lick' Camp near Monument carried out the Civilian Conservation Corps' mission. For small but needed wages, CCC men built fire towers, carved out trails, cleared brush, repaired roads and planted trees -- doing their part for a country down on its luck.
Other than the crumbling pillars and a few Norway spruces in a row, little remains of the camp in the Sproul State Forest off remote Orviston Road. Read more
