The Highlight of the 72nd Primary Election
Dear Friends, we have received the following e-mail from Joe Sipowicz:The last couple of months have been a lot of fun for me as I followed the doings in the 72nd Special Election primary. This was really the first time I have paid close attention to a state election, and boy was it an eye-opener. I guess enough has been said about the triumph of substantive record versus hollow slogans, mendacity, self-serving corruption, seemingly bottomless pots of money, and an outright lie of a residency.

Assembly Election Highlights Possibility for Restoration for the Soul of the Republican Party
This great post was written the other day right here in Fullerton by our good Friend and fellow blogger Martha Martelongo, about the 72nd election as a watershed for the OC GOP. Enjoy!
This past Tuesday night, I was in Orange County for the special election to fill the seat vacated by the disgraced, resigned, Republican, Mike Duvall, for the 72nd State Assembly district. Duvall was handpicked by the entrenched ethically bankrupt establishment of the Orange County GOP. The same group that handpicked, Linda Ackerman, whom they thought would be a shoe-in, because she is the wife of former Republican Senate minority leader, Dick Ackerman.
The winner in that race, Chris Norby, born in the City of Fullerton, in the heart of the District, has been a teacher, a City Councilman, a County Supervisor. His politics have earned him a reputation for being a staunch defender and innovative leader for limited government, fiscal responsibility, individual property rights, education reform, and public employee pension reform, all issues that resonate with the independent minded majority of Republicans who live in the strongly Republican District.

County Counsel Fires Shot Across Fair Board Bow; Will Ackerman Get Hit?
Weve been tracking the Sell the Fair (To Us) Movement recently and noted that Dick Ackerman had already admitted to being hired by an insider Board cabal whose intent was to get the State to sell the Fair to themselves.
A couple days ago word leaked out that the County had gotten into the act, possibly to forestall the sale of the Fair, and to own it themselves.
Attached is a copy of letter sent by the Countys top lawyer, Nick Chrisos, to the local Attorney General representative. Youll notice that Chrisos spends no time fingering the Board and its lobbyist, Dick Ackerman. Chrisos wants the AGs office to open an investigation. Why? Because by the time the Board got around to hiring Ackermans law firm on July 29th 2009, to help pull and persuade the RFP, they had already hired them to create their non-profit Foundation, with the intent of buying the fair themselves. Apart from the evident open meeting and conflicts of interest, Chrisos wants to know about what public expenditures were made by the Fair Board to hire lawyers to work for the benefit of their own foundation.

The Fullerton School Districts Budget is Really Screwed Up
Lets keep this simple today the Fullerton School Board is staring down the barrel of an unprecedented budget hole. To insulate themselves from the difficult decisions, the board is asking the Budget Advisory Committee to recommend a solution. This committee consists of unionized teachers, administrators and PTA parents.
At this point, the budget shortfall is at least $10,000,000. How will they bridge that 11% gap?
Of course weve seen plenty of threats to reduce special programs, administrative overhead and other gimmicks, but the elephant in the room is that 90% of the unrestricted funds go to employee pay and benefits.

What Do Ackerwoman, Galloway and Perez All Have In Common?
With the announcement by a woman named Sue Perez (who is connected to the wackos at Trinity Broadcasting and seems to be a friend of Lorri Galloway), that she intends to run for 34th State Senate District, we have the spectacle of yet another candidate who doesnt live in the district they want to represent. The announcement by this woman who wants Senator Lou Coreas job, got us to thinking about some of our recent aspirants for State and County office, including the Ackerwoman and Lorri Galloway, herself.
We all know by now that Ackerwoman lives in Irvine, but wants to represent North OC in the State Assembly; Galloway lives in Anaheim Hills in the 3rd Supervisorial District but claims to be running for the 4th District. Other than that they are all females, a common denominator is that any one could soon be using the yard next door as their phony residence. Of course we have left out Harry Sidhu who, like Galloway, lives in the 3rd District.

Martin Wisckol Passes Along Final Valentine To Ackerwoman
The other day the Registers number two press agent for the Repug Machine, Martin Wisckol wrote what he no doubt hoped would pass as a species of objective reporting,
here. Yet somehow it fails the smell test, as might have been predicted.
Notice how Wisckol equates Norbys pointing out that Ackerwoman is a carpetbagger (true!) with her campaigns libelous misuse of court transcripts in a case that was dismissed by an appellate court! Martin unhelpfully points out how Ackerwoman did live in the 72nd District for a long time a long time ago; as if anybody thought that was germane to the fact that SHE LIVES IN IRVINE NOW!
Notice too, how Wisckol passes directly along, without a shred of skepticism that Ackerwoman is some sort of well versed authority on water issues (of course he diligently omits reference to her MWD vote last spring to raise commodity costs to local water retailers by 20%). Typical. We remember how he swallowed whole her lie about being a businesswoman,
here, and then actually tried to explain away his apparent credulity as some sort of reporters strategy.

Dick Jones is an Obama Republican!
Ah the unkindest cut of all! But true.
Listen as Jones explains how Redevelopment is there to build infrastructure for nightclubs, as well as hand out interest-free loans, to stim-u-late business. So much for a conservatives faith in free enterprise and keeping gummint out of our lives. Seems like Jones has a special place in his heart for corporate welfare - dished out to his buddies in downtown Fullerton.

Okay, Seriously. Why The 72nd Election Matters
We considered ourselves pretty much hopelessly cynical. Most local elections dont seem to matter much, at least here in OC. The choices are determined in Repuglican primaries between various assorted mixed nuts with more ambition than brains; people whom you wouldnt hire to walk your dog. People of no real ability but a crafty sort of skill at ferreting out the main chance for themselves. Remember Duvall? Bulldozer Daucher? Every council election gives birth to a new litter.
But this time it really is different.
Chris Norby is not perfect. A long way from perfection like most of us. But his political attributes far outweigh his liabilities. He is a rock-solid conservative who has fought for property rights against the incursion of government depredations for decades. At the County he has opposed pension spikes, PLAs, and other policies that unreasonably raise the cost of government to the people who pay for it us.
As a city councilman in Fullerton Norby time and time again had to stand alone in a lonely fight against the boondogglery of the Redevelopment Agency and completely incompetent affordable housing schemes - foisted on us by his colleagues. You see, Chris put the welfare of the City ahead of foolish collegiality with the rest of the council and with staff. He never forgot that it is the city manger who works for the council not the other way around. Unlike his fellows on the council he never came to identify himself with the bureaucracy at the expense of his constituents. Remember the Utility Tax?
There is a reason a billionaire like Ed Roski Jr. dislikes Norby so much and is willing to spend tens of thousands of dollars to attack him. Its because Norby is one of the few elected officials in California who has stood up to fight the redevelopment abuses that create sham cities like Industry where Roski rules over his supposedly democratic realm in effective majesty.
