<![CDATA[Cover Crop & Soil Health Evaluation Field Day on April 23 near Friesland Learn more about cover crops and how they impact soil at "The Big Dig". Dodge County UW-Extension (UWEX) and Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) will host a cover crop soil evaluation field day Tuesday, April 23, from 9:30 a.m. to noon, near Manchester/Friesland on Eisenga Farms Inc. cropland. "The Big Dig" is an educational in-field event for anyone wanting to learn more about cover crop selection, seeding techniques and their impact on soils. Registration is only $10, but you MUST register by April 16. Registration forms and maps are available at the Dodge County UWEX or NRCS offices and online at: http://dodge.uwex.edu. Steve and Wesley Eisenga have experimented in recent years with cover crop planting of Austrian Peas, oilseed radishes, spring barley, and cereal rye in a rotation following winter wheat and canning crops. Soil pits will be present for viewing what's happening below ground. Examples include one pit in a field that used cereal rye following snap beans and another pit will be in a portion of the field where oats followed snap beans. Speakers will also discuss aerial seeding options and cover crop selection using Midwest Cover Crop Decision Tool. To get to the "The Big Dig": head west from the intersection of Hwy. 73 and AW. Go west 11 2 miles. The field lies on the NW corner of the intersection of County Line Rd. and East Friesland Rd. Please park on the shoulder along County Line Road. For more information about "The Big Dig" and other Dodge County UW-Extension programs, contact Mike Stanek, Crops and Soils Agent at 386-3793; mstanek@co.dodge.wi.us; or visit the Website at http://dodge.uwex.edu. Extension personnel work in partnership with people in county, state, federal, and tribal governments; community organizations; volunteers; business; and industry.
