INDEPENDENCE | Museum receives grant
Friends of the National Frontier Trails Museum recently received a $4,870 grant.
The Missouri Humanities Council awarded it to support the museum's 'Blazing Borders' project, a seminar designed for teachers.
The project includes lectures and field trips to offer insight into mid-19th century American life. Baker University will offer it for graduate credit July 21-25. The class size is limited. For more information, call 816-325-7576.

Ex-GOP staffer in Missouri House to run for state Senate as Democrat

JEFFERSON CITY | A former Republican staffer in the Missouri House will run for the state Senate this year as a Democrat.
Chris Benjamin of Freeman, Mo., was Missouri House Speaker Rod Jetton's chief of staff until late last month, but he has switched parties to run for the 31st District seat. The district, which covers Cass, Johnson, Bates and Vernon counties, is currently represented by Chris Koster, who last August left the Republican Party to run for attorney general as a Democrat.
Benjamin on Monday will officially announce his candidacy with appearances in Warrensburg, Harrisonville and Nevada. Read more

JAZZTOWN | Kurt Elling's got no complaints

Kurt Elling is in the top ranks of jazz singers today. But he remembers a time about 15 years back when he was trying to get out of 'loserville.'
'I was living in a basement room for a hundred bucks a month, moving furniture for a living,' he says. 'But all I was thinking about was music.'
Things are a little different now. His latest CD is Grammy-nominated (in the best jazz vocal album category), and he has a busy touring schedule that includes a stop at the Folly Theater on Friday.
