County still waiting for federal disaster declaration
"FEMA's preliminary damage assessment for the county and township infrastructure is $7,053,000," emergency manager Kurt Kuhlers told the Houston County Board at its regular meeting on June 17.
County and state officials estimate another $15 million in crop and land damage. FEMA does not have assistance for those types of damages.
Kuhlers felt that the county should meet the criteria for being declared a federal disaster area for public assistance, which will help with the repairs of bridges, roads, etc., but he didn't think the county would meet the threshold for individual assistance to homeowners, as there was not enough damage this time.

Gov. Requests Federal Disaster Aid For SE Minn.
Gov. Tim Pawlenty has asked President Bush for a federal disaster declaration for four counties hit hard by flooding in southeastern Minnesota.
Pawlenty had already declared a state of emergency in Fillmore, Freeborn, Houston and Mower counties due to flooding caused by two waves of heavy rains earlier this month.
The preliminary damage estimate for public infrastructure in those four counties is about $8.3 million.
Pawlenty's letter to Bush asks for federal aid for the impacted counties through a program that covers damage to public infrastructure and other governmental costs. The state reserves the right to request funding later through programs that serve individuals.
