Critics fear car racing at Coop could wake dead

Full story: Columbus Dispatch

If Cooper Stadium is turned into a motor speedway, mourners at the cemetery next door wouldn't be able to hear graveside services shouted 2 feet away.

Any motor sports in the center of the city doesn't pass the smell test, let alone the noise test. There is no way this use belongs within city limits and county commissioners should have the backbone to reject it. I realize how tempting it is to take this offer for the old stadium in these economic times. But it is NOT in the best long-term interests of the county or the neighborhoods. I don't know how anyone can say otherwise with a straight face.

Well when the racing is going on I highly doubt there will be funerals at 5-6pm, and no school classes and racing is over by 10-11 so its not like the noise will keep you up, what a bunch of bs. Build the track it will be fun

Oh come on what about that racetrack called I-70 and it's cousin 315 running right through the same neighborhood ? Maybe they should block those as well. The sound of the tractor trailer truck tires will drown out anything coming from a racetrack.

hell yeah go to a funeral and then walk over to the races. Sounds like redneck city here for the westside. But in the past they did do some racing in the parking lot, so nothing really will change

The only thing the noise of auto races would cover up is the sound of gun shots, That hole area is a dump and it would be nice to see it put to good use..

Oh, the noise in German Village would be so bad. But wait, German Village is a couple of miles away and ACROSS the interstate. Bunch of pansies.

I live less than a mile from the stadium and I'm not slightly concened about the noise. I welcome a new enterprise at Cooper Stadium.

A classic case of a few stopping what would be good for many. If the whiners understood events such as the type this venue could host, they wouldn't be so anxious to slam the door on a money making, job creating situation for Columbus. These events would not be scheduled to interfere with schools, funerals, and would certainly not go on into the early hours after midnight. The statement "mourners wouldn't be able to hear two feet away" is nonsense. The developers understand the impact of the noise, and there are barriers and sound deadening devices that can be used. Wake up Columbus, you voted in a tax hike, now use your heads and allow this project to move forward.

I live less than a mile from the stadium and I know that a track would kill all renovation efforts that are just now starting to pick up steam in Franklinton. I hope this will not be another case of the developers getting their way due to city leaders short sighted desperation.

My bet is you live far enough away from Cooper that the noise would only be a problem if you go to the races. Check with the residence who live near Indiapolis Speedway. People have the noise to contend with AND people being killed by flying debris from accidents....point in case, a young man was killed by a tire from a race car ten blocks away from the stadium. Wake up Columbus! Our GREED is showing!

people are such whiney butts! no matter what happens, SOMEONE won't be happy. i think it's a great idea! using the stadium site for racing will surely bring in more dough for the city than the Clippers ever did.

Right on Indy! I suppose the nay sayers just want it to sit empty like the acres of public housing that sits abandoned right behind the site. That area will never be redeveloped into anything unless the cemetary buys it for expansion ground. Go NASCAR, start your engines!

If it wakes the dead at Greemlawn I want to see that.
It has been a long blighted area for many years and the baseball stadium was the only thing the area had. Central Point is long dead. But I don't agree with a race track as best use for area when more jobs are needed in Columbus. We have too many sports venues already that are broke and not able to make it without gov't help.

I say do it!!! Noise studies affecting German Village?? Come on, the other are right, you have I-70 directly in front of the Coop, 315 and I-71. Those MAJOR highways have to produce more noise than a race track! Races usually do not occur when people are sleeping or children are in school, these arguments are baseless. As for the cemetary, I can see where a few funerals could be interupted, but these could be easily planned around race times and for the residence at the cemetary...I don't think they'll hear the noise!!!

Local residence would only be impacted by race day and the traffic that attracks, but wasn't that already happening when they were playing baseball there?

Come on folks...this is developement to a blighted area surrounded by highways. This is much needed jobs to a blighted area and potential revenue to the local economy; lets do it!

Those Resting-Americans should not be disturbed. They are a very important constituancy. They vote early and often every election.
Seriously folks, according to the scripture they aint waking up until a buff angel wearing a rainbow plays the 7th tuba. Unless west side gay bars start performing script Ohio nobodys got to worry about about those terminal voters getting up and complaining.
