Schuylkill dog breeder guilty of cruelty Ruling says seven beagles...

A veterinarian testified in district court on Tuesday that seven beagles whose owner is accused of neglect were healthy and well-cared for despite injuries from a kennel fire.

At the same hearing, a state dog warden testified he approved Schuylkill County breeder John Yagielinskie's plan to keep the dogs in a temporary shelter. That housing was described as a $12,000, state-of-the-art, custom-made ''rolling kennel'' cooled by battery-operated fans and equipped with 25-pound steel water dishes designed to prevent tipping.

Judge hears of differing stories in homicide case

A Schuylkill County man who fatally ran over a woman with his pickup truck after she rejected his sexual advances kept changing his story as state troopers interviewed him, according to testimony Tuesday in Schuylkill County Court.

Joseph A. Cress first told investigators he knew the victim, Roseann D. Barrett, 45, of Girardville, as ''Ruth'' and had met her two weeks before her June 15, 2007 death.

Then he told a trooper he met Barrett at a Girardville bar, parked along a road near the small town, kissed her and put his hand up her shirt. He said Barrett smacked his face and left the truck, and he put the vehicle in reverse, heard a thump and left thinking he had hit a tree.
