On Wednesday, June 12 at approximately 12:45 p.m. a Humboldt County sheriff's deputy driving a marked sheriff's office pickup truck was driving eastbound on Highway 36 near the Hydesville Community Church when a black 1995 Ford Mustang with no license plate passed the deputy on the left over the double yellow line at a high rate of speed.

After five minutes on the phone with a trained negotiator, a reportedly suicidal man put down a gun and surrendered himself to Humboldt County Sheriff's officers near Fortuna at around 7:40 p.m. Wednesday.
