Full story: Watertown Daily Times

They said at a town meeting that a core drill showed the dam to be in bad shape. Watching them hoeraming it showes a different picture. 95% of that dam was good for 50 years. Those tree huggers could sell the broklin brooklin bridge to that board.

Amen. In reply to the previous post. So the dam was good for 50 years? Good for what? It would have cost several million to get it in good enough shape to be re-licensed as a hydro-dam. Where was that money coming from? Not to mention a few more million to build the infrastructure to actually carry the power from the dam. It's presence makes upstream flooding more severe. It blocks fish passage. It is a safety hazard. How hard was it to get out on the dam before? Those fences never stopped me or anybody I know when I was a kid. Give the nature a chance to heal itself. You might be suprised at what you see. In a year or two I'll take you fishing, and we can have this discussion again.

Dean, you almost sound as if you are a board member or higher. When was the last time we declaired a State of emergency on the salmon river. Oh ya ,last week when you took the dam out. What are you going to tell all the boaters that will be land bound, I mean sand bound, by the silt that the town paid an engineer more than the dam removal that said there was very little silt. What about the ice jambs that are coming. What do you and the board care, you don't live on the river. Why does the left always know whats best for everybody else. This should have been voted on. The only ones I hear that think this is great is the manchester followers. And last you took a town Ikon and destroyed it for fish. Jim

I got a good laugh out of Manchester in the Telegram. She said the silt would find its way to the Atlantic Ocean.

Does she have any idea how far the ocean is from Fort Covington? That silt will settle right in the St. Lawrence where it gets to over 100 feet deep on its way up to the bay.

But she opined as if she where an expert. I'm no expert, but common sense would tell anyone that the silt will just settle along the bottom of the St. Lawrence, not wash 1,500 miles into the Atlantic.

moving the dam was a very bad idea ,
the banks are washing away and the ppor people living on the river side this winter are going to be in big trouble .
who;s going to pay for all the damage ?
maybe the town.?

removing the dam was a great idea, fishing will be better and the danger of the old dam collapsing is gone.(who would have paid for that?)

Most people near the river are glad to see the changes.

hey idiot from burke.....ive lived in this village for 28 years and the only fish on either side of the dam was bullhead and rock bass. now that the habitat is destroyed whats gonna be there now.....if you think there is gonna be salmon, muskey,or walleye you are sadley mistaken! ever fish on the canadian side of that river? I HAVE many times and there are none of the fish that american rivers lied about. i asked them questions in person and all they did was lie.....when i called their bluff they were shocked and all they could say was "im not sure"! there was a guy there that was asking me questions and i asked him what he did... HE IS A FISH BIOLOGIST ON THAT PROJECT! as far as the structural integrity of the dam..... there was nothing wrong with it....did you know that cement gets harder as it ages? on the history channel show about dams they did a test on a dam built the same year(1913) and the core sample broke at 300k psi which translates to it being 200% stronger. so they could have actually fixed it and used it for power again....idiots!!!!!!

Why are you so rude, I didn't insult you?

But...only an idiot would suggest that the harder cement gets, the less likely there would be for a dam failure, and only a bigger idiot would say that restoring the natural flow to a river is bad for fishing.

You should stick to shootting innocent farm animals, commiting incest or whatever it is you do that made you so stupid.

i dont know who you are talking to but oh ok wait til this winter and see whose happy then .
i'm sorry to burst your bubble but there are so many folks so upset with this , there should have been a vote amongst all the town people to see how many wanted the dam to go.
besides what is there to like ?? its gone

The only ones unhappy with it are the ones who are against everything just for the sake of being negative, but the majority are pleased, not everuonr in Ft Covington are ignorant know it alls.
As far as winter goes, no one can dispute that a free flowing river will be safer in terms of ice bockage and flooding than one with an obstruction like a dam.

There were several public hearings. No one commented then. It was all in the paper for months. No one commented till it was too late. I don't feel bad. You should have been paying attention.

Complaining now doesn't do any good. Sorry.

well first of all you must be guilty of being a douche but i wasnt talking to you i was referring to "Dean". The only reason that you are for it is because you dont live here and dont care how the removal has disrupted and damaged the ecosystem not to mention the fact that the river is now 2 inches deep and still slow moving. In reference to your insults are quite funny because there is nothing like trying to fault someone when the fault is your own, so before you start trying to call someone out check the skeletons in your closet. I think you should have someone help you read a news paper b/c there were two guys arrested recently for shooting farm animals and one was from burke or chataugay(same shit hole). i cant imagine how dumb that must make you feel or how mad you are that they shot a bunch of your dates....guess its back to chickens or siblings for you.
