By 3 p.m. Saturday, when guests began to arrive at her Farmingville house for a seder, Gail David had spent days preparing.
She had scrubbed her kitchen cabinets, vacuuming the ones she could reach to remove any trace of leavened products, or chametz, which are banned during Passover, the Jewish holiday that began Saturday night with the traditional feast.
For the table, she made sure to pull out the family tablecloth used each Passover and prepare traditional foods like charoset, a dish made of walnuts and apples that is meant to represent mortar used by slaves in Egypt. Read more

Day laborer injured in Long Island hit-run released from hospital
A day laborer who was the victim of a hit-and-run that police are investigating as a possible hate crime was released from a hospital Monday.
The victim, a 42-year-old Hispanic man, was struck by a vehicle Sunday morning as he and at least four other laborers waited for work near a gas station at a Long Island Expressway service road, Suffolk County police said.
The man, whose name police didn't release because of the ongoing investigation, suffered a skull fracture after the car jumped the sidewalk and struck him, police Hate Crimes Unit Detective Sgt. Robert Reecks said. The driver left the scene, which is near the victim's home, police said. Read more
