Lawyers Want Takeover Of Haven Nursing Homes Till Buyer Found

Five of Haven Healthcare's nursing homes would be put under state receivership until new buyers are found while the rest of the chain would be split among three real estate investment firms, under a plan expected to be presented today in bankruptcy court.

In documents filed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in New Haven, lawyers for the Haven chain are asking the state Department of Social Services to take over the operations of Haven nursing homes in Waterford, Danielson, Windham, Norwich and Farmington until permanent buyers can be found.

With More Loan Defaults, 2 Conn. Firms Reap Millions

The foreclosure attorneys who crowd into Judge Samuel Freed's courtroom in Hartford each Monday typically come with only a file or two tucked under their arms as they line up for the orderly process of stripping away homeownership.

Not Gregory W. Staron, a young associate with the firm of Reiner, Reiner and Bendett in Farmington.

'Are there any other cases that are not with Reiner, Reiner that are ready?' a clerk calls out an hour into the docket.

With the small-time players out of the way, Staron steps up to a well-worn table and, with a thud, deposits a foot-high stack of files - targeting homeowners in Bloomfield, East Windsor, Wethersfield, Hartford, Manchester and elsewhere - that will consume the rest of the court day.

South Windsor Doctor Arrested

A local doctor who police said failed to report the suspected abuse of a child has been arrested.

Dr. Raymond C. Kurker, 54, of Cornerstone Drive was charged Tuesday with failure to report abuse or neglect by a mandated reporter, police said this morning. Officers obtained a warrant for his arrest after they investigated the physical abuse of a local child, according to a press release.

Kurker, the child's physician, is accused of failing to report the suspected abuse to the state Department of Children and Families as required by law. He turned himself in at the police station at 8:45 p.m. and was released from custody on a promise to appear in Superior Court in Manchester July 2, police said.
