Full story: The Minneapolis-St. Paul Pioneer Press

The old men hold dice. White, simple, well-worn dice, the kind you'd find in a Monopoly game .

Thank you for running this article. I'm glad to hear about old-timers who still love a hobby that they helped shape and build to the joy of millions around the world. Congratulations to them -- and consolations for losing their friend Dave Arneson this year.

I can only hope that the first three comments were meant ironically, because these guys have lives as complete and meaningful as yours or mine. Dungeons and Dragons is a great game, and getting together to play it with friends is a great time, always imaginative and funny. In 20 years, when I'm the same age that Mr. Gaylord, Mr. Maker and their friends are now, I'm sure my own friends and I will still be having fun with it, too.

This is the fault of the Republicans that cut funding of after work programs for middle aged men.

Great story...

Those of us who grew up with the original rules remember the freedom to create. Every adventure was like telling a story, which could make you laugh or in some cases cry.

While I never got the chance to meet Mr. Arneson, many years ago I had the privileged of playing with with Gary Gygax at one of the first MN Gencon's.

Fantasy gaming has lost most of it's founders and we are all poorer for their passing. It is nice to know that some still burn the torches in the dark places...

folks, don't bother listening to the comments on these boards. it's a ridiculous cesspool here, from people that obviously don't even read the articles they comment on. I read that these guys are married, and have decent jobs -- so in case the angry man from Hastings is advocating for infidelity, i don't think a girlfriend would be a good idea.

As for contributing to society, i can think of better ways to do it than typing out anonymous, bile filled rants on the Internet. Stay classy there, Hastings.

I know a lot of older D&D players who are still enjoying the game. Every one of them, it turns out, is married and probably much better employed than the geniuses who are on here calling other people losers. Nerds and geeks, yeah, mostly. Scientists, computer analysts, lawyers and writers often are. Really smart and successful people, though, with lively intellects and vivid imaginations that they bring with them to all aspects of life. Myself, I gave up the game decades ago and am probably the worse for it.

What the heck makes you think that these people aren't contributing to society and don't have significant others?

What's the difference between playing D & D and watching football every weekend with your friends? Or playing golf with your friends?

Are you so lacking in imagination that you can't possibly think of other hobbies to have besides football and golf? Must everyone be exactly like you?

I pity you for your narrow life.

If you read the article you'll notice at least one of them works from Medtronic. Sounds like he's contributing to me.

Probably better than you have loser.

Thanks for this article...
I have enjoyed D&D on and off for 35 years or so. It's nice to see the original crew still getting together to enjoy the game they helped create and pay tribute to their friend, Dave Arneson.

Thank you. These men deserve all the praise and acknowledgment they can get. Dave Wesely is particularly humble in this piece, considering it was his efforts to bring non-zero-sum game theory into the group that truly inspired Arneson towards that style of play, resulting in the capacity for individual heroes to work together for common cause.

All hail the Great Men of Gaming!

Thanks for the article. Played the game for 30 years myself, sounds like we don't do it much different from 'The Source'. I'm sure we've all seen that little hut in the woods somewhere along our journeys...

Thank you for posting this feature, alas I never got into the Dungeons and Dragons game, when younger; could have but didn't ... I did get into video games and enjoyed RPG's like Zelda in it's assorted incarnations: NES, Gameboy, Gamecube, Xbox, and other platforms.

Which likely owe their genesis to the creative endeavors of Arneson and Gygax.

Daily Horoscope for December 19

Libra

Don't try to do too much at once today or you'll disappear up you know what! You're all fingers and thumbs, accident-prone and things start breaking. It won't help if you're trying to concentrate at work and a certain chatterbox doesn't know when to shut up. Ask them to be quiet but try not to sound shrewish.
