Local Advocate Attends Annual Gathering of Survivors to Increase Awareness of Sudden Cardiac Arrest

Fairfield, NJ, October 14, 2009 – October is national Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month and local community advocate Scott Larson of the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association’s (SCAA) Northern New Jersey chapter joined nearly 300 medical professionals, volunteers, advocates, patients and survivors at the 2009 SCAA Annual Meeting & Medical Education Conference October 9-11, 2009, in Chicago, Illinois. Throughout the conference, Larson learned of medical advancements in the treatment of SCA, federal and state legislation addressing the public health crisis of SCA and emerging technologies to expand response, treatment and public knowledge about the risks and impact of SCA. “This meeting was a valuable resource to increase my knowledge and help develop strategies to work with others to raise awareness about SCA,” said Larson. “With nearly 300,000 Americans dying each year from sudden cardiac arrest, there is much to be done to teach more people CPR, place more AEDs in public places, improve emergency procedures, and encourage those at risk to seek preventive medical care.”

Blood Drive

The Cedar Grove Ambulance & Rescue Squad will host a blood drive on Monday December 21st from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at their headquarters located at 651 Pompton Avenue in Cedar Grove. The drive will be conducted by the Blood Center of New Jersey. According to the blood center generally, people in good health are eligible to donate. Blood donors must be 17 years of age or older. There are no upper age limits provided all health requirements are met. The Blood Center of New Jersey needs to have 250 people donate blood every day in order to meet the needs of patients in the hospitals and medical centers we service. Each donated unit of blood is tested and broken down into different components. According to a Louis Harris poll conducted in 1998, sixty-eight (68%) of people who donated in the last year said they had no plans to donate in the next 12 month. It is estimated that 75% of the population will need blood at some point in their lifetime. Yet less than 5% of the eligible population donates! With the holidays rapidly approaching the need for blood donations will increase. The squad wants to help and is asking that you support this drive.
