Fairfield Kiwanis Club hosts annual Kids' Day

Fairfield Kiwanis Club will kick off its annual Kiwanis Kids' Day Saturday with a pancake breakfast, and a parade that parade chairman Don Kremer said children could participate in. Kiwanis Club members will serve pancakes, sausage and refreshments from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. under the big tent on the east side of the Fairfield square.

Revitalization fund renewed another year

The Fairfield Area Chamber of Commerce and local financial institutions have partnered to reauthorize the Fairfield Revitalization Fund though July 2015. The fund, targeted for small and emerging businesses in downtown Fairfield and three blocks in each direction from the square and the "New Chicago" area, boasts participation from local banks and credit unions such as Community 1st Credit Union, First National Bank in Fairfield, Iowa State Bank and Trust Company of Fairfield, Iowa, Libertyville Savings Bank and MidWestOne Bank.

Survey finds lack of quality housing in Fairfield

Results from an online survey suggest many of Fairfield's residents are unhappy with the housing options available to them in the city. The Fairfield Economic Development Association and city housing task force sponsored the survey, which attracted 414 responses.

Carry On Bags feed food-insecure students

CarryOn Bags is teaming up with local Fairfield schools, Hy-Vee and First United Methodist Church to start a program to feed youth who lack food to eat on weekends. Louden Depot Community Credit Union of Fairfield has gone into receivership, and most of its members and assets have been taken over by Community 1st Credit Union of Ottumwa. Community 1st announced the acquisition of Louden's assets in a press release today.

Resident speaks out about gravel roads at supervisors' meeting

"This is an environmental catastrophe," Fairfield resident Kurt Minges said today in reference to the road in front of his residence, which he felt, was being over-graded, resulting in too much dust. This came after Supervisor Becky Schmitz produced a letter from a resident about road dust and said she had driven on several gravel roads finding "big chunks" of broken up road between Redwood Avenue and Tamarack Avenue.
