Some in Lake County ask: Would new water rules go too far?

By almost any measure, Denise Laratta cares about conserving water. The Royal Harbor resident follows the rules by irrigating her lawn twice a week -- and only if her grass needs it.

I get so sick and tired of driving by developments and seeing massive amounts of water being used to keep the St. Augustine grass at the entrance lush and green.  Every evening, when we drive by Colina Bay on rt. 455, they are watering.  They often use so much water that it literally runs down the road...and they often water while it is raining!  How about governers on their water wells that only allot so much per week.  They maybe they'll curb their watering.

And how about "outlawing" St. Augustine grass for any building (houses and commercial) starting immediately. It's the water used for keeping the grass green that is the biggest culprit of water waste! These homeowners associations should not have the authority to require people to water excessively.

And let's not even start on the water bottling plant in Groveland!!!

Outlaw St. Augustine grass? You are willing to let government tell you what you can and can't have in your yard? Think about what you are proposing. This is the United States of America, for crying out loud! Keep on giving up your rights and freedoms in small increments and before long you will have none.

If our all-knowing governments are really interested in conserving water (or anything else for that matter), let's see them prove it by stopping the blank check approval of all of these residential developments that suck the water out in the first place!

Don't forget St. John's possibly approving Niagra and then telling you that you can only water once a week March thru November. It's more than developers it's large permit requests not disaproved when we have water conserving requirements.

Yes...I think that when people are not disciplined enough to act for the common good (and I certainly think that having sufficient water is for the common good!), then government should step in. In this case, there are plenty of grasses out there that don't require constant watering to stay alive.

However, I totally agree with you that over-development is the root of the problem. Unfortunately, it seems that the only thing that has been able to stop the uncontrolled building is the poor economy. I shudder to think what will happen in Minneola and all the other towns when the economy turns around!

How about setting up a facility that gives homeowners recycled water....like the smelly stuff I grew up with? It is ridiculous that we pay for fresh drinking water to water the lawn!

PS...I think the city should re-sod all of our lawns. The Bahia weed in our backyard is so gross. Bermuda is the only nice looking easy to maintain grass. City of Clermont needs to think of some GREEN way to help us utilize our water. OUR water, right? We pay for it.
