Each night when Anna Maria Caldara lays her head on her pillow, she is surrounded by Jewish history. It's in the air she breathes and in the walls around her.
That's because Caldara lives in what was the only Jewish synagogue in the history of the Slate Belt, and that heritage she's been living with has inspired her to write a ''A Great Miracle Happened Here: The Jews of Pennsylvania 's Slate Belt.''
Few Jews live in the Slate Belt today, and even when the synagogue was open, their population likely numbered fewer than 30 families. But the story of how they fled Europe and ended up in Bangor , where they helped drive a bustling Slate Belt economy, cannot be measured in numbers, according to the 70-page book released Sunday to kick of the Slate Belt Heritage Center's 11th season.
