Aldermen find out about burglary a year after it occurred
Less than five days after a hearing that resulted in Police Chief Sam Steward being fired, information on a burglary and robbery of the Elsberry Police Department located at 317 Broadway has come to light.
Last week The Elsberry Democrat was informed by an anonymous source close to the situation that the police department had been broken into in June 2008. According to this source more than a dozen guns were stolen.
The Elsberry Democrat contacted the Elsberry Police Department asking for an incident report. Sgt. Brian Jeffries stated I will have to get back to you. From there General Manager Michael Short contacted City Attorney Robert Guinness. Guinness stated he was just made aware of the case and would look into getting the report. From there reporter Ashley Holton contacted Elsberry Mayor Carla Potts to see if she could assist in getting the incident report.
Mayor Potts stated she was innocent and didnt know anything about the burglary. She also told Holton to go ahead and print whatever we needed to print even if we didnt have the report. A request was also filed in writing with the City Clerks office.

After a seven-hour hearing last Tuesday evening (June 23), Elsberrys Police Chief Sam Steward was terminated. The 4-2 (Aye: Boswell, Harper, Kindred and Mahurin; Nay: Copeland and Gladney) decision came after the motion was moved by Alderman Bob Kindred and seconded by Bill Boswell.

Chief Steward Terminated
After last night's hearing a 4-2 decision was made to immediately terminate Elsberry's Police Cheif, Sam Steward. This decision came after the motion was moved by Alderman Bob Kindred and seconded by Sherill Edelen. The hearing that started at 7 p.m., went on until a decision was finally reached around 2 a.m. this morning.

School District special use permit approved; No fireworks on 4th; Citizens rally for Police Chief
After weeks of discussion and hearings the decision was finally made by the City of Elsberrys Board of Alderman to approve a Special Use Permit requested by the Elsberry R-II School District at the City Council Meeting on Tuesday, June 9. The permit, requested by the district to build a bus barn located on the property formerly known as the Khoury League Ball fields was approved.

NET team seeks fugitive from Elsberry, Travis Davis
On Tuesday, May 19, the Lincoln County Narcotic Enforcement Team (NET) investigated a possible methamphetamine lab in the area of the 500 block of South Ridge Road. At that time, detectives located two individuals, who were actively manufacturing methamphetamine. While attempting to make the arrest, one suspect, identified as Travis W. Davis, 29, of Elsberry, escaped from the scene in a motor vehicle.

ADJOURNED: Elsberry City Council meeting ends abruptly after Aldermen sworn in

In a meeting that was reminiscent of a three-ring circus or a sporting event, the almost 100 guests present at last nights Elsberry City Council Meeting ooh-ed, ahh-ed and challenged calls made by the council members. A round of applause could be heard on one side or the other as the events of the evening unfolded in the City Hall with a crowd that left standing room only.
