Record-setting rains leave trail of despair
“It's been a mess. It's pretty devastating”
It has been a quarter of a century, folks say, since southeast Missourians experienced flooding as damaging and dangerous as what slammed that area the past two days.
With at least five people dead following record-setting rains, and untold numbers of homes, businesses, and roads swamped from overflowing rivers and creeks, people across southern Missouri are taking stock of losses and preparing appeals to state and federal officials for help.

Jazz Town | An unusual alignment of stars
Hey, we've got star power!
This weekend brings a whole constellation of instrumental stars to stages in Kansas City, in a harmonic convergence that our jazz scene won't see the likes of again for some time.
Even more notable than the sheer number of stars involved is the stylistic range that they cover, from the popular and accessible to the exploratory (and still accessible).
Here's the lowdown:
** Wynton Marsalis, the brilliant trumpeter, and his Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra have a sold-out show at the Folly Theater on Friday. They're putting an emphasis on the music of Duke Ellington, in a program themed 'Ellington Love Songs.' So this is name-brand jazz, clean and solid and neatly played by a tight 15-piece band. This is one of the rare forays into jazz by the Harriman-Jewell Series; they like to book Marsalises, but we wish they'd book some other jazzfolk, too. Read more

“I'm trying to get more people to fall in love with this music”
H e's the bandleader and arranger, inspired by Dizzy Gillespie and Machito and Duke Ellington -- but he's inspired by Jimi Hendrix, too.
He's the drummer, inspired by Tito Puente and Buddy Rich -- as well as Frank Zappa and James Brown.
He's one of the keepers of the Latin jazz flame, and he's determined to stoke that flame even higher -- and win new fans for all of jazz in the process.
He's Bobby Sanabria, current nominee for a Grammy Award, and he's bringing his AscensiA3n nonet to the Folly Theater on Saturday night. Read more
