Local governments try a new kind of bidding
When Perkasie started replacing its Christmas decorations, borough officials were left with a puzzling question: what to do with the old castoffs?
Borough Manager Dan Olpere said he just want to pay to have them thrown away. But 40 sets of used decorations are hardly the stuff of consumer excitement, he said.
As an experiment, Perkasie advertised the items on an eBay-like Web site specializing in online municipal auctions.
The result was a $100 bid from the tiny borough of Elkland, Tioga County.
