Ex-Inmate Goes To The Top For Help He Needs

Full story: The Hartford Courant

It could have worked out so much worse for Leroy James Gardner. The 44-year-old ex-offender was released by the federal government Friday with only his brown prison outfit on his back, no money in his pocket, no referrals for housing or counseling - and without his anxiety medication.

Hook this guy up with Rick Green. For a just a couple of interviews Green will be the guy's personal chauffeur and can get him started in hot dog business with five or six pairs of sneakers.

"His story is fascinating." No it isn't Stan, he is a career loser not worth anything. All he has done is taken from society and he has the audacity to ask for more.

I'm hardly a bleeding heart liberal, but it's absolutely insane to not have re-entry programs for those who want to break away from the old life.

Without programs, it's a virtual guarantee that we'll keep spending huge sums on recidivism, not to mention the additional crimes, victims, neighborhood quality of life issues, etc.

Wouldn't THAT be a great place to put The Obama's "stimulus" money? The returns would be immense.

Where are the voices on this from our lazy, self-serving, platitude-spewing state and federal legislative bodies?

This is all part of the "prison industrial complex" that I have mentioned time and time again. It is similar to the "military industrial complex" that President Eisenhower warned the public about. Their goal is to keep people in prison. They don't want people to make it on the out side. It's their business. The military industrial complex wants war. They want an "evil empire". It's their business. It's time that the public take back control from these special interest groups for the benefit of us all.

The other unnerving thing about Gardner's story is that he should never have been imprisoned last August for violating parole. He was under dual jurisdiction — the feds and the state — but had been reporting solely to the feds for the previous 27 months. The feds and the state didn't communicate, so the state thought Gardner was AWOL.

The state later conceded that it messed up, Lawlor said. So, here was a guy diligently looking for work when I first met him last summer. He gets re-imprisoned wrongfully — then, when he's ultimately transferred to the feds again, gets unceremoniously dumped onto the streets.

So the guy did 9 months in jail due to blatant government incompetence? Scary (but not surprising). He should receive some degree of compensation for that, enough at least to pay for a security deposit on an apt and some food and clothing.

what do you think they have been doing in jail. The programs are endless. They all got religion be a pastor. I have lots of friends who have never been to jail and are out of work with no govt support. If a person were ill and laid up for a year what support do they have in getting a job. Life is tough so stay out of trouble.

When I was released from prison last November after serving 6 years the only thing I had was a pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt. The prison offered no help in vouchers or rehabilitation. They said go here or go there. With absolutley no means of transportation and no money what was I going to do? Social Services took 2 weeks to help after endless paperwork and a couple of appointments. Thankfully my local church helped me out. The system is slow and eager to put people in jail but not eager to try to help when you are released.

You're being naive. It doesn't matter how many programs are given in prison if, when they get out, there is no place to live and no chance of getting a job.

To just toss them on the street is stupid and guarantees the events I mentioned above. A short term assistance program wouldn't have perfect results, but it would pay huge monetary and societal dividends.

Let's see what Reactionary Rell will propose doing in this circumstance. An y bets? Any guesses?

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

She and the rest of the legislators will let these people flounder in our streets until - by necessity - they will reoffend. Some violently and others less so yet still, in the end, they will offend.

We will all sit around our tables and PC's, asking each other, "How could this have happened?" No one will recall this story of the hundreds and hundreds of other stories JUST LIKE IT.

I for one have no sympathy for the con/ex-con of anyone that violates the safety, security of trust of our society BUT (Yes, there is a BUT) I realize that to care for the society at large, we MUST tend to those we force to serve time and then, once released, provide them the ability to make another start.

I'm not saying give them handouts, welfare, entitlements or include them in Obama's vision of the next, great welfare state.....

I am saying give them the opportunity to fend for themselves and the tools needed to do so. That's all.......

By the way - stop with the delusional, psychotic, "Prison Industrial Complex" garbage..... You guys are sounding more and more like a bunch of wackos and NO ONE wll be willing to assist you then. Get it? A trip to Whiting or CVH will be your ONLY assistance should you continue this nonsense.....

THERE IS NO PRISON INDUSTRAIL COMPLEX! THere are only a WEALTH of criminals in our society now that make it necessary to build more prisons........ NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND. Look in the mirror for the answers to THAT conspiracy theory, will ya'?

It's funny that you think that the idea that certain individuals profit from keeping people in prison is insane. Do you think prison guard unions or operators of private for-profit prisons have nothing to gain from increasing the number of people in jail? And do you not think that these groups would try to influence politicians to their advantage (like most organizations do)?

You need to learn reading comprehension. The article, including the text I referenced, was written by Stan Simpson, Hartford Courant Reporter. I assume that he did not make up the state admitting that they kept Gardner in jail based on a mistake.

Once again Tommy, you prove that you are an idiot, I am amazed you are capable of reading and writing. I didn't at any point discuss keeping a single human being out of prison, let alone all criminals. Nice straw man.

I did read your post thoroughly. I am fully aware that you are quoting Stan Simpson's piece. I still maintain that you like so many people are easily duped by the likes of Leroy Gardner. You, like Mr. Simpson do not fully understand that while the State certainly makes mistakes individuals like Gardner who have in fact been given many chances simply can not or will not seize the opportunities given to them. Hey it's only my opinion. Again you'll learn .
<quoted text>
So you support putting people in prison without due process for no reason? I am stating a FACT that government incompetence put him in jail for no reason. He was jailed for his crimes, later released and put on parole, and did not violate his parole, yet was put back into jail anyway. His previous jail time was his own fault for being a criminal, but once he is released he should not be put back into jail if he does not break the law. You still lack reading comprehension as I am in no way defending him, I am complaining about a government too incompetent to properly track parolees.
