While it may seem to many Carbon County residents that the general election last fall just finished, it's time for local candidates thinking about running for city offices to get ready to file to run in the November 2009 races.

On July 1, 2009, senate bill 81 will come into effect across the state of Utah. The bill which was passed by the state legislature in 2008, requires county sheriffs and other law enforcement to "make a reasonable effort to determine the citizenship status of a person confined to a county jail," as worded in SB 81.

Growing use of surveillance video cameras in Carbon County is allowing law enforcement to have an unblinking eye over nearly all incorporated areas, including Helper, Price, and East Carbon City .

In a short meeting on June 17, the Carbon County commission met to confront an assortment of business ranging from East Carbon's Community Daze, to issues surrounding the county drug court's polygraph tests.

On June 18, East Carbon City tentatively approved it's 2010 budget, and as with any budget review, discussion arose, but overall the process went smoothly with only a few issues.

Pete Hyita, born and raised in East Carbon, UT and Quetta Larsen Hyita, born and raised in Moab, UT will be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.

On June 10, the Price City Council discussed the possible creation of a new recycling program with excess funds from a recent tippage fee reduction at the East Carbon Development Corporation.

On June 9, the East Carbon City Council met to review many of its on going projects that are nearing completion including the new walking paths, as well the city's geographic information system project to map it's utility system.

Carbon County's Recreation and Transportation Special Service District met on June first to discuss and approve further actions on the the new senior citizen's center that is to be built on the old airport site by Fairgrounds road.

East Carbon's newly built walking paths are proving themselves difficult to maintain with the city maintenance department's current equipment, which brought up the issue of the department's overall equipment status at the May 26 city council meeting.

On May 7, the Utah Permanent Community Impact Board approved an $83,120 emergency grant to make emergency repairs and upgrade the Sunnyside water treatment plant in East Carbon City.

Carbon commissioners met on May 18 to discuss some leading local projects, including one involving the county's emergency dispatch system.

Each year many riders go through the "Blessing of the bikes" in many areas and the Friendship Riders intend on keeping the tradition going in Utah.

Americorp/VISTA week is May 9-16 and the agency has a lot to be proud of in eastern Utah.

The local National Alliance on Mental Illness affiliate meets the third Monday of the month at 6 p.m. Bridges and family classes are Thursday at 6:45 p.m. Connection support group meets Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Sun Advocate office in Price.

ENOCH - Minnie Oliver Bronsema, 81 years old, passed away peacefully at the home of her daughter in East Carbon, Utah on April 27, 2009.

On Saturday, 80 emergency personnel from 16 units in a five-county region descended on Aspen Grove at the north end of Scofield Reservoir to attend training put on by state forestry department's fire and lands division.

The free event will be presented April 11 at 11 a.m. at the CEU Prehistoric Museum.
