Traffic deaths up in Texas' oil boom counties

The Houston Chronicle reports that deaths rose more than 50 percent in the West Texas counties located on the Permian Basin. Deaths also went up about 11 percent in counties associated with the Eagle Ford and Barnett shales, according to Texas Department of Transportation records.

Budget aimed at restoring tax rate

Although opposition is mounting to fight a plan to increase the Karnes County tax rate, county officials are emphasizing that the proposed rate is needed to meet the current needs of county government. County Judge Richard Butler said his efforts are aimed at restoring the county's tax rate to a more normal level, after several years where it had been allowed to plummet to the lowest county tax rate in the State of Texas.

There is no doubt that Karnes County's annual budget has grown over the past five years of transformative change brought about as a result of the development of the Eagle Ford Shale oil and gas boom.
