(Breaking news) Driver killed in collision with officer in Dunkirk

The average speed on Rt. 4 is approximately 70 mph on any given day, and most days the Calvert County Police speed right on past you. If you are one of the people who are going 55 mph you have them right on your tail until you move, or they switch lanes and zoom right on past. I have on occasion been passed by officers, with no lights and sirens, going in speeds that have been in excess of 75-80 plus. I feel they are frequently putting many of us at risk, as you don't always hear them speeding up around the corner. The location of this accident, was I feel at a blind spot "hilled turn." The curve in the road would never have given the "other person" a fraction of a second it would have taken for the officer to speed up around the hill, even if she looked both ways twice and decided to go, the officer would feel "she was in his path" when on the contrary, she was turning with what she would feel to be ample time, with no vehicles (at normal speeds) coming. When all of a sudden the officer would be inside her space. Route 4 is a tricky road with many turns that do not give ample time to cross or make a U-turn, when at a curve in the road, or on a hill, and by the time you choose to cross, there is someone going entirely to fast, right there! You pray every time you get on the roads in Calvert County, you pray for your children, and even for those who are speeding past you when you are keeping up with traffic. Many will agree, in Calvert on Rt. 4, the average speed on a daily basis is 70 mph. We really need to come up with some better road plans, perhaps close off some of the turns/U-turns that are on situated on curves in the road, or hills that leave blind spots. ya i have seen them fly by me with no littes on i think they sould have a system that makes them go the speed limit unless there littes are on

yea the cops go fast. but it was in response to a call. its sad, because i know the girl who dies. she graduated high school with me last month.

My heart goes out to the family. I dont' know if the police is to blame. I just think that young adults don't have the fear in them when driving like an adult with a family has. I will not cross rt 4 into our community unless i know there is enough distance to cross over . sometimes I have several cars behind me beeping their horns but I don't let the pressure get to me. It's my life and my children in the car with me. More traffic lights at intersections? Maybe turnabouts? Maybe speed bumps? I am for anything that will slow down the drivers and save the lives of our teens, young adults and the rest of us...Concerned mom..

in response to the comments made about the cops average speed without running "code" (ie lights and sirens). Many cops are instructed in this county to drive quick to a call without lights and sirens since there is a higher chance that cars (many of those who can't drive in the first place, and ofcourse we all know that- many of our young and old ones) will tend to freak out and cause an accident (ie running into others cars beside them) to move out of reaction. One way we all as citizens can help the reduction of this, is if we just move out of the way of vehicles that want to pass in the fast lane in the first place (including emergency and police vechilces). If we could all make this a habbit and stop immpeding the flow of traffic, many positive things could result. Better flow of traffic, which equals less aggressive drivers, quicker patterns for emergency and police vehicles so they do not all have to run code, especially to domestic calls (which are the highest in our county)! I tend to do ride alongs and help in the fire house and see how ignorant people are and most can't drive. I must bitch everyday on RT 4 b/c of some idiot in my way on the way to work! Not saying this is every single case, but we are the last ones to bitch when the police/ambulance can't get their quick enough!! Just a thought

Going the speed limit in Maryland period is taking your life in your own hands. Pray, go and kiss the ground when you get where you need to go. If they go 70 in that 45 zone its a slow day! The state troopers are far worse with speed. They need more than 6 of them at the speed traps on RT 4. They line cars up alll day long passing out tickets. Speed bumps and 25 mph traffic people might go 55 in a school zone! I get high lights flashed at me for going 25 in a schoool zone and honked at from behind. We do NOT live in europe by the autoban PEOPLE! I might also add NO ONE SEEMS TO THINK THEY NEED TO MOVE WHEN THE SEE LIGHTS AND SIRENS in the state of Maryland! I WAS THE ONLY ONE PULLED OVER TODAY WHEN A FIRE TRUCK AND AMBULANCE CAME FLYNG DOWN RT 4! 10 or more cars passed me. Then had a guy screaming from his truck because I slowed him down. Can't wait till the cops start locking the jerks up!

That is the most ignorant thing I have ever heard. Cops not keeping their lights and siren on for fear of causing an accident? Is this a problem out there? Also, there comes a bit of common sense for officers when responding to calls. Yes they can legally speed, but to what degree is the question. The intersection where the crash took place is right were the speed limit drops to 45MPH. It drops for a reason because higher speeds are unsafe and the visibility is terrible. He should have slowed to the speed limit there and then picked it back up, just as they do for traffic lights. This is just stupid in my opinion.

I was outside my home when this accident happened..I live a few hundred yards from that intersection..to say the officer was speeding is and understatement. My 12 year old son even heard him go flying by our house and remarked that he MUST BE IN A HIGH SPEED PURSUIT. I did noticed that the sirens ended abruptly, but didnt hear the crash. I hope an investigation as to how fast he was going is done. From what I heard myself his speed was way too fast, regardless of the reason for his call. there is plenty of time to make that turn that she did when cars are coming at even a faster speed, his was way out of line. his sirens didnt even sound normal he was going so fast. more like a whalling sound rather that the normal ear piercing noise they make

Id also like to add that the speed limit doesnt change to 55 MPH until after you pass the Bill Board on the south bound lane...but it seems that once people leave the light at safeway they floor it unitl they reach the bottom of the hill doing 75 mph or so. ITS 45 MPH THROUGH DUNKIRK. DO THIS AND THERE WONT BE ANY ACCIDENTS AT THE TURN AROUNDS.

If you were the person who made the call reporting domestic violence and was having a gun placed to your head you wouldn't feel that the police officer wasn't going fast enough since your life was hanging in the balance. That is there job to respond as quick as possible. To blame the police officer or police officers solely is completely wrong. When I travel down or up route 4 through Calvert Co. the cars that are at high rate of speed racing past me are the young drivers trying to race there friends with no concept for others. This is why it is called an accident!!! I am sure that the officer had no intention of hitting this other vehicle. My thoughts and prayers are with both families. I know we want to blame someone for this tragedy but look at this from both sides.

Dude, that is crap. Again, slowing down won't make that big of difference in the officer getting there. Depending on the distance he may have made up 30 seconds. I am sorry, it was too fast.

There is no excuse for endangering the lives of the public when responding to a call. Police officers have the responsibility of ensuring they do not put anyone at risk when they are driving. I hope there is a full investigation to determine whether this police officer is at fault. I was not there but it only makes sense that we slow down when we approach blind spots or areas that have limited visibility. My thoughts and prayers are with both families.

the Cop was a Moron like most cops in Calvert County, all they ever do is set up speed traps and they are the ones always speeding. I hope the cop gets thrown in Jail for negligent homicide.

I normally try and stay away from commenting on these situation. But, your comments stirred a reation in me especially as a parent. You seem to imply that you are placing the blame on the poor girl who lost her life and isn't around to defend herself. I saw the seen after the fact and there were many factors that would need to be concsidered before passing judgement on any of the drivers (including the Deputy Sherrif). The accident occured just befor a major intersection and would it would be only reasonable to assume that the driver of the who was killed may have thought, as I do, that most cars would be slowing down and not speeding coming to the intersection. It should also be noted that according to the article the Deputy was speeding. "Quote: "He was speeding, but he was speeding legally," Evans said of Wells, who he believed was wearing his seatbelt at the time of impact. Unquote" I believe we need to let the proper authorities with all the known facts decide who was at fault for this unfortunate accident.

You won't be complaining when that Police Officer is speeding (which they are supposed to do) in response to an accident that you are involved in and could be possibly injured. I think all of you who are criticizing the Police in this county are some of the most ignorant people around. How many "young driver" accidents have there been in Calvert County in the last couple years. It is extremely unfortunate that this young girl died, but she PULLED OUT IN FRONT OF A POLICE OFFICER. Bottom line it was her fault. I hope that the next time you are in trouble and need the Police to come save you, you remember your bashing comments about how fast they drive...maybe they will only go 55 to you when you are in need...whether it be because you are pinned in your car that is about to explode, or because someone has a gun to your head. Think about it!!! Everyone is so quick to blame the police for things and that is rediculous! They risk their lives everyday for scumbags who don't even deserve it and all you can do is bash them. the cops in calvert are LIARS from the sheriff on down. they break the law to enforce the law. i have seen it first hand mutiple times.
the report from this accident will NOT be objective - they protect their own.
didn't another calvert cop almost kill himself a couple years ago? it was right down the road from this current incident. he had been drinking at a party, passed out on his way home and wrecked his patrol car. now he is paralyzed for the rest of his life.
it's one thing to bash to cops for everything. it's anohter to blindly defend them. they are not infallable. in fact, the police in calvert county are some of the worst ever. i would love to see the average results of an IQ test given to call calvert deputies.

alot of you dont get the point no mater what the call was cops do not have the right to endanger other peoples lives to respond to a call. I have been through emergency drivers training for the fire dept and it is our responsability to protect and serve not endanger other people and as for the quote above from sheriff Evans that the Deputy was speeding leagly is just insane. Cops in general drife way to fast on and of duty not just the ones in this county, it is something that should be addressed by the county government. With as violent as the impact of this accident and the obvious speed involved it is unreal for anyone to say this girl is at fault in the least!!!! I made this comment based on what I have seen around this county, Not judging who is in the right or wrong in this situation! It sucks, period! I just wish people can see how ignorant they can be in certain situations instead of judging the "cops" and medic units in this county. There are some of them (whom I know of personally) and know they are idiots, just like the ones we all work with. They are many good ones also! Like a ride along a few nights ago, the cop escorted the finance's mother of the 27 yr who died this week after she was pulled over doing 90 through rt 4. The officer was not aloud to run code however, he drove very quickly,(escorting her) all the way to the end of the county to let her see him before his last breathe. Which he didn't have to do, or wasn't supposed to do. She's not the emergency. Just stating what I've seen. I'm not a detective and looks like noone else is one this forum!
