Despite delays from the June 29 derecho, crews with the West Virginia Division of Highways are continuing road repair and maintenance projects across Mercer and McDowell counties.

A residence in the Duhring community of Mercer County went up in flames Friday afternoon with four local fire departments dispatched to combat the blaze.

Nerves were on edge at U.S. District Court in Beckley Thursday morning as counsel for the government and the defense made final arguments before the court pronounced final judgment and brought an end to a case of obsession that spanned nearly four decades.

The sentence for a Mercer County man convicted of stalking will last almost 20 years.

Thomas Creighton Shrader, 56, of Duhring, was sentenced Thursday morning to nearly 20 years in prison on stalking and weapons charges.
