Not to disrespect the Columbia Crew in any way...

But Downey knows how spend money in the most stupidest places.

Was driving down Lakewood Blvd, and noticed that they spent a fortune on purple/blue short street lights and traffic signals that shined over the sidewalk rather on the street.

It was almost nauseating seeing all these Willie Wonka light post every ten feet and then a tree in between....

Hey Downey,

Save your money... no one is going to hate you if you don't rename Clark,

Put that money to better things like repaving your damn roads.

Most of the Facility that produced the space shuttle is no longer there and is now parking spaces and a Bed Bath and Beyond....

Dedicate the parking lot if you have too. but, come on...

If your going to do any naming it should be Tesla Way....

Consider this... 20 years from now Downey has a another council... another mayor... another cause... streets can be renamed every day... If Downey is serious about a Columbia memorial do something that is "permanent" long beach did a beautiful memorial on the southeast corner of their old aerospace property... and it will remain as a tribute,,, Lakewood did the plane and poem at Del Valle park that still makes me cry when I read it! Clark ave and its residents from long beach to Downey have serious life-threatening problems that all 4 cities need to spend money correcting.. these are the same residents that would be the most affected in a negative way should a change be made...city dollars should ALWAYS be spent to benefit living taxpayers not honor tragically dead ones... see speak out(tuesday) and response for better suggestions in allocating funds for clark ave...

The lights are for the walkers, not for drivers. And they always have graffiti all over them. I walked from Pep Boys near Florence all the way to where I live near on Foster Road and saw Graffiti on the posts and sidewalks all the way to Foster Road.
Use the money to clean that up. Why not use one of the landscaped areas on Clark to
erect a nice memorial plaque instead of renaming the street.

How true. There is a school in Norwalk that I pass every day on the way to work. A few years ago the city wanted to rename the school but the elementary school kids objected. They cherished their school name and did not want it changed. It wasnt.
I think before changing any name on any building, park, school etc a search should be made on why the original name was chosen. A great disservice may be being done to the original honoree.

it costs about 1500 to change... not a big deal. as far as permanent memorial. thats what the columbia memorial learning center is for. its actually quite a building and a great local museum. opening THIS weekend the 24th.

Thanks for reminding us. I will try to be there. Maybe they want to change the street to make it easier to find the learning center. Who knows? But changing the name of a street does affect everyone on the street and should be carefully thought out which is what the council decided to do.

The residents that lived near Furman would just complain aboout the noise. They complained about little league baseball being there. That is why we have it at Golden Park. Unless the population has changed a lot.

After the week end the lkwd residents of clark ave endured if you are going to rename this street for the tragic dead than you might as well save time and money and name the street Memorial highway... because there are going to be a lot more tragic dead on this street!! With the overwhelming traffic problems including trucks and an ever growing residential population there is NO room or excuse for officers to be traveling at top speed(in packs of 5) in RESIDENTIAL AREAS at 5:30 pm on a FRIDAY night SOUTH BOUND toward standing traffic at an intersection currently torn up (south and Clark) this "street" is the Only street with no side service streets to protect either the residents or the traffic... and is DOCUMENTED to be one of the most heavily traveled! Our street is barely 4 cars wide ! the sign says to PROTECT and to SERVE... my neighbor was the last person in her car watching those cars barreling down on her.. living here she knows how bad things are and knew therewas nowhere to go and no room for mistakes by those officers She thought she was going to die!..the officers made it down the street but she is left terrorized.. this has happened too many times here... it has happened to me! and many others it WAS the beginning of clark in crisis many years ago(a petition signed by neighbors on this street) something HAS to be done to make this area safer....

Why would you want to rename a street to remind people on a daily basis of a catastrophe?
Why don't we rename Bellflower Blvd as "9/11 Street?" Lakewood Blvd could be renamed "Hurricane Katrina Way," and Atlantic could be renamed "Secret Bombings of Cambodia Blvd."

We(the residents of clark) are at the mercy of escalating crime all around us and unfortunately the sheriffs dept (large enough to service 5 surrounding cities )is located on our street about 5 blocks away!.. police officers traveling at high rates of speed and adrenaline come down our street in "packs " of cars( up to as many as 27 I've counted ) and TWICE this weekend in a strictly residential areas that includes 2 churches and 2 schools and 1 park! WE ARE THE NARROWEST STREET(4 cars wide) in the area WITH a horrible traffic problem...MY neighbor was in dead traffic waiting for the signal watching as 5 police cars she estimated at speeds over 100 miles per hour came up behind... with traffic backed up at the light and parked cars on either side she watched and prayed knowing she could not pull over and get out of the way if the car that was turning the corner has not had time to stop all 5 police cars would have hit standing traffic at high speeds ..her first..same thing happened to me while walking my dog an officer again at high speed and in a pack missed the turn and lost control I looked that officer in the eyes before he regained control of his car! this type of incident has happened many times and to too many neighbors here.. either directly or watching as similar scenarios unfold.. it is horrifying! the police officers recoup WE do not,,, the terror and fear is overwhelming and WE live with it EVERY day.

Back in the day of "the projects," so politicians decided it was time for more "social engineering." They decided that to get blacks out of the projects, and away from the influence of other blacks, they would begin a program that would allow poor blacks to move into middle-class neighborhoods with HUD vouchers, that would pay all, or most, of their rent.
I mention middle-class neighborhoods because there is a "glass ceiling" for HUD renters, in that you won't find HUD recipients living in Naples or Park Estates, because the people with money there, would make life for those who rented to HUD people, very unpleasant via class action suits of one kind or another, as well as the fact that rents in those areas go beyond HUD's willingness to pay.
This is how rich white communities keep HUD housing out.
Middle-class communities can't do this. Rents are cheaper, and HUD will often pay a good portion, if not all the rent, so that these people can use welfare monies to pay the difference, and then you get to have a HUD family, and all their visiting relatives and friends, living right next door to you, the homeowner.
HUD renters, therefore, diminish middle-class neighborhoods via the artificial importation of the welfare culture into middle-class communities. They can behave however they want, because they are renters. They have no stake in the community, nor seek to gain any.
Unlike homeowners, if push comes to shove regarding their behavior and neighbor complaints, they can simply pick up and move across the street, or in another middle-class neighborhood and start all over again.
This is why your neighborhood is experiencing a dramatically diminished quality of life.
The future of your neighborhood is more white people moving out, more offsite landlords buying your house, and renting it to HUD people, until Bellflower turns into another Inglewood.
Sorry, but that's the way it is right now.
Bellflower used to be a sleepy, quiet, nice community, perfect for raising kids, and allowing them to roam the neighborhood without fear.
Not now.

Perhaps all of those white people who now find Bellflower distasteful should move out to Victorville where there are plenty of other white people. Unfortunately, those high desert folks don't have plenty of teeth or functioning brain cells, but they are white and that apparently seems to be paramount on your list of what makes a good neighbor.

I am proud to say my street is multi racial and multi social, but mostly multi generational.. bound by our problems and the life and death situations we have all been through together we have learned to survive by 3 simple rules ..save your family ,,protect your property and look out for your neighbors the same... we also know full well the "element" traveling down our street toward the 91 on ramp or towards our city bars and mall,,, they total our cars,,, and run their vehicles into our homes at a frightening pace,,, what "they" mostly have in common is not their ethnic backgrounds but their "criminal" attitudes and intentions...and lack of insurance! Heartbreaking for us is the fact that this "element" that is the source of most of our problems is NO more dangerous than the officers who are chasing them,,,so it doesn't matter to us if "they" actually live here or not...

You need to keep up with current events, Sparky. Victorville is now a mecca for blacks on HUD. They found a place where the mexicans won't follow them, for the most part. They even have black entertainment venues with the accompanying crime increase, black gang violence etc. The place used to be a sleepy little town. Not anymore. Blacks got that place hoppin' right now.

Daily Horoscope for December 26

Sagittarius

Mercury turning retrograde in your house of finances carries a rather unseasonal message, because it's telling you to pay attention to your finances over the next few weeks. If you already know that you've overspent this month, you won't need to be told that a few economies are just around the corner. Get the facts straight and pay attention to the small print. You may also have to make some adjustments to an intimate relationship so it can move into another phase.
