Archer City residents spent a second day on edge Thursday as firefighters nervously watched a smoldering 13,548-acre wildfire just a mile and half from town.
Officials ordered a 'precautionary evacuation' that will remain in place today, moving nursing home patients and jail inmates to facilities in neighboring towns. The local school closed early, and residents in the town of 1,895 were told to flee if they heard storm sirens.
'I'm sure it's going to be business as usual around here [today], but we've told people to stay alert and pay attention,' Archer County Judge Gary Beesinger said. Read more
