I can't believe it. Forty-nine paragraphs in this article and not one -- NOT ONE -- mention of the responsibility of blacks to take advantage of the extensive education opportunities afforded them as a result of the civil rights gains of the half century. And yet, studies such as "The Relative Earnings of Black College Graduates" show that black college graduates do succeed and prosper in the fields for which they prepare themselves. Early childhood education is the only aspect of education mentioned, but what about graduation from elementary school, high school and college; what about parents doing what is necessary to push their kids to excel; and what about black students themselves, particularly boys, staying in school instead of dropping out as more than 50 percent do in Chicago? Kerner report aside. If education is not the path chosen, the only other one available is the street and it's often a one-way journey.
