West Deptford Man Sentenced to Seven Years For 2011 Sexual Assault

A West Deptford man has been sentenced to seven years in state prison after being convicted of sexually assaulting a 21-year-old woman in his home at a Christmas party in 2011, the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office announced on Friday. Paul Matelyan, 41, argued that the verdict against him went against the weight of the evidence, but that argument was denied.

Paulsboro police settle with three brothers in alleged assault case

PAULSBORO - Three brothers who accused Paulsboro police officers of assaulting them in 2011 have settled with the borough for a sum of $60,000. Shavon Mears, of West Deptford, and his brothers Artavius and Eltereake, both of Paulsboro, filed complaints in August 2011 saying three borough officers - Francis Grogan, Gary Kille and Vernon Marino - assaulted them in May of that year.

'This will never be a normal day': Families of 9/11 victims ...

Gloucester County marked the 13th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on Thursday morning, bringing together the families of local victims and the community to remember, together. "It's hard to believe it's been 13 years," said Senate President Steve Sweeney, recalling being at Red Bank Battlefield in National Park the day of the attacks, and seeing the usually bustling airway across the riverbank empty, without a plane in the sky.

Deptford school district to appeal state ruling regarding insurance contract

The board in February chose Alamo Insurance as a broker without taking the contract to bid on the grounds that the insurance broker provided a "professional service," meaning the contract could be awarded without a public bid. The state's Office of Fiscal Accountability and Compliance disagreed, saying in an Aug. 12 report that a professional service "requires knowledge of an advanced type in a field of learning acquired by a prolonged formal course of specialized instruction and study."

Pitman police arrest Glassboro man, 58, for urinating in public

A pair of officers arrested a Glassboro man on Aug. 26 on charges of disorderly conduct after the suspect was allegedly urinating in public. Patrolmen Marshall Pierson and Eric Weist responded to the call in the borough's business district shortly before 11 a.m. and arrested Anthony DiPisquale, 58, of Glassboro.
