Community discusses gang violence in Deerfield
When Sylvia Poitier learned that there is more gang activity in Deerfield Beach and Pompano Beach together than anywhere in the county, the doyenne of Deerfield Beach didn't hesitate. She called a meeting.
Police, pastors and others gathered recently to meet with the city commissioner. The half-dozen youth who showed up, however, left for basketball practice even before the speeches were over and the discouraging news began.
Gang statistics are daunting here because the area is geographically bigger, said Sgt. Dan Fitzpatrick of the Broward Sheriff's Office Multi-Agency Gang Task Force. But that's only part of the reason. The other, he said, is that gangs once confined to Haitians and African-Americans now cross all lines.

Planned Parenthood expels South Palm Beach and Broward Counties chapter
Planned Parenthood has expelled its struggling Boca Raton chapter, citing a pattern of substandard finances, management, medical controls and clinic conditions, national office leaders said Tuesday.
The rarely seen punishment was imposed by the group's national board Monday evening, and it means the local family planning agency born 33 years ago as Planned Parenthood of South Palm Beach and Broward Counties can no longer use the group's name.
The national office had shut down the chapter's five South Florida clinics in March and referred its 25,000 patients to other local providers and to a second Planned Parenthood chapter covering the rest of South Florida. That second chapter, in West Palm Beach, now plans to gradually open new clinics in Broward and south Palm Beach counties.

Murray has been in Tennessee using up his pre-retirement vacation, and his colleagues planned to honor his 30-year career as a police officer in Deerfield Beach and his pivotal role in bringing the PAL program to Deerfield by naming a new PAL facility after him. The facility is on the second floor of the fire station on East Hillsboro Boulevard.

1 killed, 1 arrested in FBI drug sting
It was just after 10 p.m. Tuesday when two cars pulled up to a darkened warehouse.
Three men armed with assault rifles emerged from one car and walked toward the building.
Suddenly, FBI agents exploded on the scene, announcing their presence and calling on the men to surrender. The gunbattle that ensued left one of the gunmen dead, two others wounded and the target of the operation in federal custody, an FBI affidavit said.
The drama near downtown West Palm Beach was part of a sting federal agents and city police set up to capture one man, Frank Jackson, and the other Broward County men he called his 'goons,' the report said.
