Martin invasion: 6,000 purple martins roost in Davie
The evening spectacle builds slowly, but soon becomes so loud and compelling that even customers dazed by the price of the $4-a-gallon gas they are pumping look up and take notice.
'Are those bats?' asked Sergio Baena, 32, agog over the aerial commotion above the RaceTrac service station at 2855 Davie Road.
No, those are purple martins, North America's largest swallow, and by the thousands they swoop in just after sunset to roost in three Java plum trees in a narrow parkway between the station and the busy six-lane thoroughfare.
