Authorities still do not know the cause of a Cumberland fire that took the lives of two children on Monday, Cumberland Police Chief Michael Crooke said shortly before noon today.

Officials say two children are dead and four people were taken to the hospital following a Monday morning apartment fire in Cumberland, just east of Indianapolis.

Raymond Alvarez was on his way to work when he heard the screams. He turned and saw a man outside his neighbor’s condominium unit in the 12000 block of East Welland Street.

The fire broke out just after 9 a.m. at the Raintree Commons Condominiums at 12010 E. Welland St., near Washington Street and German Church Road, in Cumberland.
