As You See It

“By not having a county-wide tax, Santa Cruz County is missing out on potential funding that would help pay for, say, widening.”

Last week's story about the Aptos Village Plan failed to mention a controversial aspect of the planning process. via Santa Cruz Sentinel

Re: Cheap Hauling "junk trucks"

I believe there's a phone number on the sign for the "Cheap Hauling" trucks. Did you try calling the owner and expressing your concerns?

I just hate that the Cheap Hauling trucks park so far up to the corner that you can't see around them when pulling out that you have to pull into the street or side walks to see around them. There must be a law as to how far back from a stop sign you can park.???? p.s. has anyone actually hired them and discovered that although they are cheaper than other hauling services they are NOT cheap!

Maybe we could hire them to clean up Pacific Ave.

Those cheap hauling trucks add to beauty of our county with their big yellow signs and old dirty matress hanging out of the back.
They are entrepreneurs, except not to bright when you leave an open truck sitting there for like days and people just fill it up and leave.

The "Cheap Hauling" trucks you see parked around town do not actually run. They are there for advertising purposes only. Sure, they can be moved a few feet to avoid getting a ticket but if you look underneath some are missing transmissions and starters. Another had part of the motor and exhaust system missing. A clever way to get around the sign law don't you think?

At least those trucks should be parked a safe distance from the corners where one must strain to see around them to make a turn.
There oughta be a law!

Why all the fuss about the Cheap Hauling trucks? The owner of the business has succeeded in getting people to know of his business. And if parked trucks annoy you as far as scenery goes, what about all the tagging/graffiti, garbage and other eyesores we have to look at everyday? I'll take the trucks over the other offensive scenery any day!!

These are a nuissance and I would never hire this company because of the blight their trucks are on my neighborhood. I'm in Santa Cruz, so I call vehicle abatement (four two zero, five eight six three) whenever they're parked somewhere for 72 hours. Note that just moving a few feet does not protect them from this law.
Isn't there a law against storing commercial vehicles on city streets overnight? I'm going to look at up in the municipal code.

I looked up the municipal code and it looks like these trucks are exempt from the commercial parking laws because they weigh less than 10,000 pounds.
However, they are subject to parking twenty feet away from the corner of an intersection. According to section 10.40.040 of the Santa Cruz Municipal Code:
No operator of any vehicle shall stop, stand, park, or leave standing such vehicle in any of the following places, except when necessary to avoid conflict with other traffic or in compliance with the direction of a police officer or other authorized officer, or traffic sign or signal:
(9)At any place within twenty feet of a crosswalk at an intersection (in the central traffic district) or in any business district when such place is indicated by appropriate signs or by red paint upon the curb surface, except that a bus may stop at a designated bus stop;

(10)Within twenty feet of the approach to any traffic signal, boulevard stop sign, or official electric flashing device;

I can think of examples on Mission Street where I believe this company has violated these laws.

Why should they get to have giant advertising billboards floating around the county?

I think that is against some ordinance.

I did an online search for "Cheap Hauling Scotts Valley" and came up with links to some very informative news artices. Two articles on the Pressbanner dot com website show that this business owner has a history of leaving his trucks on the streets as a form of advertisement. People were not happy about it in Scotts Valley, either.

Why don't we fill the trucks with all the Santa Cruz feminutcases and dump them off the Golden Gate bridge. Especially the "poster child" for whackjobs, Elaine CharKOOKski!

Talk/Text while driving:
I saw some stats from last year that showed way more deadly accidents happen annually due to cellphones than from drunks. Maybe the fines should indeed be comparable. At very least, fines should be given liberally, and they should cost MORE than a bluetooth headset, to possibly encourage people to get one. I have one. Its looks stupid, but I don't use it outside of the vehicle. And now, all eyes are on the road, and hands are on the wheel and shifter.

I love this idea. I may actually do that. And because of their crappy tactics, I'd gladly go through Got Junk instead. But this Free Hauling idea is even better.

The law goes into effect 7/1/08. I can't wait.

Good thought. Make sure you don't put anything on the truck that can be traced back to you through address or name...

Hey Paul. You say,..."I want to hear how the Board of Supervisors is going to address this possibility. Unless they come up with the right answer, I can't support a road repair tax that generates funds to widen the freeway." Yet you campaign tirelessly for the idea of buying the railroad right of way from Union Pacific. Yet you and your co-conspirators NEVER EVER tell us where the money will come from to pay for maintaining the track structure, replacing the bridges and trestles that need it and building the pedestrian trail (next to alive rail line no less). Speaking of that aspect of things, can you think of a company in their right mind that would insure such a venture? Same goes for you David Wright. Please answer the above points with clarity for all to see.
