The Morning Call
The idea of opening a blues club in south Bethlehem had been smoldering in Les Houck's imagination since February. In May, however, phone conversations with two booking agents turned the fledgling impresario's ambition into a four-alarm blaze.
As Houck explained his vision of the venue, ''They both told me, 'Dude! You're gonna knock 'em dead up there!''' recalls Houck. ''That was about 10 minutes apart. I wondered if they had spoken to each other, but they hadn't. That set me on fire. From then on, it was full steam ahead, pedal to the metal.''

Upper Saucon could lift building ban
Since 1996, the Upper Saucon Township supervisors have enforced a moratorium on development in the area west of Coopersburg, claiming the borough has overloaded the township's sewer lines.
That could end Tuesday, when the supervisors -- spurred by an order from the state Department of Environmental Protection -- are expected to pass an ordinance essentially lifting the moratorium, a move that would pave the way for hundreds of new homes.
''They're waking up to the fact that they can't use public sewer to prevent development,'' said John Fenningham, a lawyer for McGrath Homes, which is in litigation with the township.

'One man army' Alton Knappenberger dies
Alton W. Knappenberger, who was born in Coopersburg, worked on a pig farm and received the nation's highest military honor during World War II, died of natural causes Monday in Pottstown Memorial Hospital. He was 84.
Pfc. Knappenberger, an Army draftee, was awarded the Medal of Honor for acting with ''conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity'' in his first and only combat experience just days after the Allied landing at Anzio, Italy, in 1944.
He picked up a Browning automatic rifle, ran alone to a knoll and held off a German attack for more than two hours near Cisterna di Latina, 30 miles from Nazi-held Rome, on Feb. 1, 1944. The field was littered with 60 German dead.
