Robert C. Long read a brief note in the Jan. 15 edition of The Star about a man from Colby, Kan. who may have died of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a rare fatal disease that affects the central nervous system and turns brain tissue spongy.
The news item said that tests were pending.
Long, of Olathe, wondered what happened. He's especially concerned because of the perceived connection the disease has to the human form of 'mad cow' disease.
The answer
The man's death was not related to 'mad cow.' Instead, it was Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, says Joe Blubaugh, spokesman for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment. Read more
