Candidates collecting signatures

“We have to gather 1,000 signatures in a week, so it's a challenge and I'm not so sure it's ever been done," said Mike Russo, 43rd Senate seat candidate.

It's going to be an uphill battle for Russo. The former district manager for Congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand has less than two weeks to meet his goal. He's canvassing voters in Clifton Park to make up for lost time. If he wants a shot at Joe Bruno's seat, he's got to make his move.

"It takes people to take a people seat. So if you'd be up for signing a petition sheet that would be great," said Russo.

I Love My Heart Corp. goes bankrupt

I Love My Heart Corp., a company that billed itself as upstate’s oldest specialty fitness equipment retailer, has closed its doors.

The Clifton Park retailer filed for Chapter 7 liquidation in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Albany Friday, shortly after Saratoga National Bank and TD Banknorth repossessed two company vans.

“I knew things were slow, but in the past I’ve always been able to get by. But this time sales were drastically down in April and May,” said I Love My Heart President Edward Bernstein, who also is a physical therapist. The Company may have been able to survive had it not wasted advertising dollars on publications like Success Magazine LTD a fluff publication with no distribution and national ad prices. Thousands were lost.

Early town man didn’t hang around area

Thousands of years ago, ancient humans hunted for food in what is now Clifton Park.

Fred Stevens, who serves on the board of the Iroquois Indian Museum, said after the Ice Age subsided 16,000 years ago and a large sheet of ice melted, it created the river and the landscape that make up the Mohawk River Valley. The runoff from that glacier melt created a lot of underground water and natural springs and streams, Stevens said. These rivers attracted animals and people.

“That’s what drew the first Native Americas to the area,” he said Sunday at a talk at Grooms Tavern. About 50 people attended the lecture, which was sponsored by the Friends of Historic Grooms Tavern.
